Psychiatric Nurse 2

The Position

Psychiatric Nurses provide professional nursing care to individuals with developmental delays, developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities or social, emotional and/or behavioral disorders, in an institution or out-patient setting in accordance with the authorized scope of practice specified in the Nurse Practice Act.

Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training. This position is located at High Desert State Prison.

The Psychiatric Nurse 2 role involves managing patient care plans, conducting psychotherapeutic interventions, and providing health education. Nurses communicate care plans with team members, collect and document patient data, and attend treatment team meetings. They exercise psychotherapeutic techniques to help clients modify or eliminate dysfunctional health responses and ensure safety through appropriate use of restraints and seclusion. Psychiatric Nurses identify health education needs and teach principles of physical and mental health.

Additionally, nurses interact with patients to respect their rights, encourage participation in self-care plans, and set safety limits. The Psychiatric Nurse 2 manages psychiatric activities, document patient evaluations, and handle medical interventions by assessing health problems, triaging, and obtaining necessary physician orders.

The PN 2 manages medication administration, observe patient responses, and recommend treatment plan changes. Continuing education is vital, as nurses initiate independent learning, participate in in-service programs, and communicate new knowledge to others. Proficiency in computer skills and adherence to OSHA guidelines and safety practices are required, along with maintaining professionalism and effective communication with staff and inmates.
