Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner - Emer Dept - FT

This is a position on the staff of Horizons Mental Health Center but will work under an Employee Lease Agreement in the Emergency Room of Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. The functions and responsibilities shall be governed by the Statutes of Kansas State Board of Nursing, the Medical Staff by-laws of Hutchinson Regional Medical Center and the policies established by the Board of Directors of Horizons Mental Health Center.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• The Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner will initiate the diagnostic evaluation of both outpatients and inpatients to include conducting a complete psychiatric assessment and physical exam formulating a diagnosis based on clinical findings; ordering, conducting and interpreting appropriate laboratory and diagnostic studies and procedures; making appropriate referrals to other disciplines as necessary and conducting brief psychotherapeutic interventions with patients, and their families when appropriate.

• Collaborate with Emergency Room physicians and other members of the Emergency Room treatment team in developing a treatment protocol for individual patients presenting in the ER who might have a psychiatric component to the concerns that led them to come to the ER.

• Specific responsibilities will include the prescribing, monitoring, managing and evaluating psychopharmacological and related medications. This will include educating the patient, family, and/or significant others regarding the indication for, desired effects and adverse effects of psychotropic medications.

• This staff will also provide consultation to the ER physicians regarding behavioral health medications, treatment and referral options

• Perform State Mental Health Hospital (SMHH) Pre-Admission assessments and work with SMHH staff for admission if deemed appropriate.

• When a patient is assessed to not be in need of psychiatric inpatient treatment, this staff will develop a safety plan with the patient, and concerned others as appropriate, which will also include appropriate referrals for outpatient services deemed appropriate for the patient.

• Work with the Medical Director, staff psychiatrists and other HMHC medical staff to provide inpatient psychiatric consultation on medical floors of Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, work with attending physicians and follow up of patients once seen.

• Assess patients in the ER for admission to the Behavioral Health Unit of Hutchinson Regional Medical Center (HRMC)

• Will be expected to participate in community education and public information programs of the Horizons Mental Health Center as designated by the Medical Director.

• Will be expected to participate in the continuing education activities of Horizons Mental Health Center to include presentations to staff pertaining to areas of interest or expertise or to present the content of workshops attended to other staff members.

• Articulates all service provisions through timely and quality record documentation.

• Completes related activities as assigned by the director

• Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

• Working knowledge of criteria used for diagnosis of mental disorders.

• Working knowledge of medical disease processes that may be impacted by mental disorders and their treatments

• Maintains a current broad-based knowledge of the pathophysiology of medical disease processes, psychiatric illness, and psychopharmacology

• Knowledge of MS Office software.

• Keyboarding skills.

• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively.

• Multitasking and prioritization skills.

• Ability to apply advanced nursing principles.

EDUCATION/LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:

• APRN licensure through the Kansas State Nursing Board

• Certified as Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

• One to three years' experience working in a behavioral health setting.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

• APRN - MSN & Advance Practice Degree with Psychiatric Specialty (Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, PMHNP) or

• Physician's Assistant licensure by the State Board of Healing Arts.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

REQUIRED LICENSE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION:

• Current licensure as an APRN in the State of Kansas or Physician Assistant (PA-C)

• If APRN, must have Psych/Mental Health Certification.

• NPI Number and DEA Number.

• Healthcare Provider BLS - if BLS is not American Heart Association, AHA BLS is required within three months of hire.

• Kansas State Driver's License.

• Auto Insurance equal to or greater than the Kansas insurance requirements.
