Psych Care Plus is the admission and outpatient scheduling service for UPMC Behavioral Health Service Line for WPIC. The Clinician, working in a call center environment, takes referrals from hospitals, community providers, or the public, and facilitates disposition to the appropriate level of care.


  • Ability to verbally present the case to physicians and others

  • Ability to work efficiently and independently in emergency setting.

  • Active participation and ongoing maintenance of quality management activities and the development of standards from problem identification

  • Demonstrate ability to utilize DSMV and to develop provisional diagnosis.

  • Demonstrate high standards for accurate documentation in software and within patient assessments

  • Demonstrate knowledge of mental health laws.

  • Demonstrate triage and assessment skills for medical necessity or appropriate outpatient clinic

  • Demonstrates UPMC Values in contacts with coworkers, patients, the public, and all callers

  • Efficiently take a sizable volume of calls and disposition callers to meet their needs rapidly

  • Follow outpatient scheduling or referral documentation guidelines

  • Provides accurate, timely information to coworkers, physicians, outside agencies, with a professional and courteous manner

  • Responds rapidly to appointment or inpatient admission requests through email, phone, or voicemail

  • Review and summarizes the patient information for admissions to a behavioral health unit and triaging patient for appropriate placement

  • Review the inpatient commitment for accuracy, completeness, and proper time frames

  • Works to maintain high census for UPMC Behavioral Health service line and demonstrates appropriate patient assignment


  • Bachelors Degree in Human Services or a related field with a minimum of 1 year experience in a clinical psychiatric setting or an entry level Masters Degree.

  • Ability to respond calmly and effectively, using good clinical judgment to both psychiatric and medical emergencies.

  • Excellent phone etiquette and interpersonal relations with the ability to interact professionally with all callers.

  • Ability to identify problems, implement resolution, reassesses situation/problem.

  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

  • Ability to work under stress, with an unpredictable patient flow, in a sometimes crowded work environment. A personal disposition that is warm, friendly, caring, kind and hospitable towards patients, colleagues.

  • Exhibit openness and willingness to learn. Flexible schedule; rotating shifts.

  • History/track record of all above services consistently delivered with a service excellent attitude.

VIEW JOBS 4/19/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-07-18T00:00 Description Purpose: Under the direction of the CTT program coordinator, the CTT clinician I provides comprehensive mental health services to residents of Allegheny County in community settings, including but not limited to, homes, hospital emergency rooms, personal care homes, etc. The CTT program operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. This position is responsible for assisting in the consumer service and clinical services. Primary responsibility is providing intense outpatient mental health treatment in a variety of settings to consumers with serious and persistent mental illness for whom traditional outpatient Mental Health treatment has not been effective. This includes, but is not limited to, answering questions, obtaining clinical information and scheduling outpatient evaluations, responding to telephone crisis, and documentation of all duties previously mentioned. Responsibilities: * Act as an advocate for the consumer and/or family and provides advocacy for consumers, including 302 an other involuntary commitment proceedings, guardianship, and custody proceedings. * Assist consumer in developing a crisis, relapse, and service plan. * Assist consumer to set goals and plan to meet those goals based on consumer's strengths, needs, interests and cultural preferences * Assist consumers to obtain and maintain culturally appropriate basic living needs through skills such as: food, medical care, recreation, education, and employment, through referral and assertive follow-up, advocacy, and problem resolution. * Collaborate with team members to provide needed services to coordinate with other community agencies. * Complete consumer/family crisis assessments. * Maintain a minimum productivity rate of 55%. * Maintain accuracy and completeness of patient records in compliance with institutional standards. * Manage crisis situations effectively using positive approaches. * May facilitate or co-lead small groups of consumers/or significant others to increase understanding of consumer issues and to improve coping skills and performance of activities of daily living. * Participate in 24 hour on call rotation. * Participate in and/or completes a comprehensive assessment of identified clients. This includes social history, psychiatric history, and mental status exams. * Participate in outreach visits to consumers in various housing/living situations. * Participate in team meetings in a collaborative manner. * Participate in working weekend rotation. * Provide consultation and direct assistance to the DEC or community ER staff in the case of at risk consumers presenting for treatment, emphasizing safe diversion from inpatient stays in accordance with ACT models of care. * Provide follow-up services to consumers by phone. * Provide insight & knowledge of insurance programs, processes and able to obtain authorizations as needed. * Provide quality care to consumers following the Assertive Community Treatment(ACT) Model of mental health care delivery. * Provide services in a community and/or office setting. * Provide supportive counseling to consumers to promote stability. * Provide therapeutic interventions with fidelity to the ACT model of care and using evidenced based practices. * Responsible for learning, continuing education, and implementation of ACT standards of care. * Serve as primary case coordinator for a caseload of 10-15 individuals/families, yet may work with any member/family on the active caseload as needed. * Submit documentation that is professional in content and appearance by established deadlines. * Support consumer and negotiates appropriate referral services. * Support consumer's WRAP plan. * Utilize specific techniques of motivational interviewing. * Work efficiently and independently. Qualifications * Bachelors Degree in Psychology, Counseling or Social Work with three years clinical experience or masters Degree in Psychology, Counseling, or Social Work required. * Other fields of study may be considered with coursework of at least 12 credits in human services and/or relevant mental health experience. * Work history that includes phone triage, as well as an in depth knowledge and proven skill at doing psychiatric assessments. * Experience in mental health crisis intervention, case management, or in home therapy preferred. * Excellent, recovery-oriented interpersonal relations. * Ability to work shifts, weekends, holidays, and to assume on call responsibilities. * May in the course of their duties be in rooms where medications are stored or may transport medications when they transport patients. * Transportation of medication is limited from one department to another.
