Job Description:

The Inova Fairfax Medical Campus is opening a NEW UNIT for Psychiatry. The NEW UNIT sees a Behavioral Health Nurse Practitioner. Responsibilities include:

Clinical Practice & Management of Care: Provides safe therapeutic care in holistic and systemic way to include the assessment and overall management of care for a specified patient population under the supervision of an MD.

Exercises independent judgment in the assessment, diagnosis and initiation of medical processes and procedures in accordance with the nurse practitioner licensure regulations of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and as delineated in the written Scope of Practice/Protocol for Nurse Practitioner. Teamwork: Communicates effectively and works collaboratively with others. Demonstrates respect for and understanding of other clinical disciplines, and uses an integrated approach to achieve desired patient outcomes.

Evidence-based/Best Practice: Utilizes evidenced-based standards, guidelines, and protocols for care delivery. Incorporates data and information to continuously improve care and practice.

Professional Development: Ensures improvements in practice settings by assuming responsibility for self-development in life-long learning. Provides direction and guidance to others regarding practice, serves as a resource, and mentor. Leadership skills demonstrated in decision making and problem solving.


Progressive clinical nursing experience- 3-5 to five years of clinical nursing experience as a RN; NP experience preferred.

Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing- Bachelors in Nursing and Masters in Advanced Clinical Practice or graduate of a post masters certificate program for nurse practitioners, or certificate from an education program that is accredited by the Council of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs/Schools, American College of Nurse Midwives, American Association of Colleges of Nursing of the National League for Nursing.

VIEW JOBS 4/19/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-07-18T00:00 Dominion Hospital, the only freestanding mental health care facility in Northern Virginia, leads the region in short-term mental health services for children age 5-12, adolescents age 13-17 and adults age 18 and older, as well as therapeutic programs for eating disorders The Behavioral Health Technician III/Lead provides supportive nursing care and administrative services to behavioral health patients on a designated unit in a manner consistent with the philosophy and objectives of Dominion Hospital. Participates in the multidisciplinary treatment team plan of care. Works collaboratively and acts as a role model for members of the health care team, maintains a safe environment, provides excellent customer service and provides patient and family education. Demonstrates competency to provide age appropriate, recovery, and trauma informed care to adolescent patients (13-17 years of age) adult patients (18 and older, including geriatric patients age 55 years ). Provides milieu management and oversight of potentially violent patients. SPECIFIC DUTIES INCLUDE: * Demonstrates expertise in recovery and trauma informed care, mental health promotion, and maintenance of high quality comprehensive patient care. * Displays respect for patient's integrity, patient information and patient rights. * Demonstrates expertise in the performance of tasks necessary to maintain a therapeutic milieu and optimum patient care. * Works closely with the charge nurse, nursing supervisors and Nursing Director to maintain and manage the milieu * Ensures tasks such as q 15 min checks, environmental rounds, educational groups, etc. are completed in a timely manner * Ensures group activities and the unit based schedule is followed * Acts as a mentor for psychiatric technicians * Participates in shift report * Assists in completing the Broset Violence Checklist * Maintains patient's activities of daily living. Performs all specific skills assigned including personal hygiene such as bathing and keeping beds, clothing, and living areas clean, assists patients with meals; monitors patients in Cafe', and assists with meals on unit according to procedure. * Gives direct patient care to assigned age groups in a complete and accurate manner. * Assists patients with ambulation as necessary; observes approved safety procedures. * Demonstrates the ability to appropriately and safely use hospital and department specific equipment. * Takes and records measures of patient's general physical condition such as pulse, temperature, and respiration, to provide daily information * Charts patient information according to hospital standard. * Observes patients to detect behavior patterns and reports observations to nursing and medical staff. Charts accordingly. * Intervenes early and uses least restrictive interventions in an effort to prevent behavioral emergencies * If indicated, able to physically intervene in a therapeutic manner * Member of the hospital wide Code BERT Team * Provides patient and family education. Leads prescribed individual or group education sessions as part of specific therapeutic procedures. * May rotate among various units as needed or directed. * Assists in orientation of patient to unit according to approved policy and procedure. QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION * High School Graduate or GED required. * Associates or Bachelor's degree preferred in a health related field, or significant experience working with individuals in a behavioral health setting. * Demonstrated competency in BLS and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) required upon hire or within 90 days of hire. Certifications: CPR-Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers required. (CPI) Crisis Prevention Institute completed as a part of the general hospital orientation. Experience: At least one (1) year in a related field and/or an undergraduate degree in the social science field strongly preferred HCA Falls Church VA
