The Tissue Processing Technologist is responsible for the vital technical procedures of the Utah Lions Eye Bank transplant services; namely processing of ocular tissue for endothelial procedures (EK), and determination of tissue suitability by way of tissue evaluation. Additionally, The Tissue Processing Technologist participates in medical review; performs surgical recovery of ocular tissue; and assists in the training of staff and operations as needed.

Responsibilities

The Tissue Processing Technologist will be responsible for the following:

  • Processing and preparation of specialized ocular grafts for transplant procedures including endothelial transplants. Related duties include preparation, evaluation and release of processed tissue as well as the maintenance of required supplies and equipment.

  • Slit lamp evaluation and specular biomicroscopy of all ocular tissue intended for transplant. To facilitate timely evaluation, training of applicable staff and leading slit lamp conferences are required, as directed.

  • Know and utilize OSHA standards when handling tissue and disposable hazardous materials and participate in annual bloodborne pathogen training.

  • Maintain compliance with Federal HIPAA regulations and complete annual HIPAA training as required by the University of Utah School of Medicine.

  • Assist in education and training of technical staff.

  • Complete annual Safety-CAT training per University of Utah School of Medicine's policy.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in biological/physical science or a related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience), plus one year experience in eye banking and tissue evaluation. Completion of Eye Bank Technician Certification within one year of hire is also required.

EK processing experience is preferred.

This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements.
