The Family Cancer Assessment Clinic (FCAC) at Huntsman Cancer Institute is looking for a cancer genetic counselor to join our dynamic multidisciplinary team! This genetic counselor will provide education, risk assessment, counseling, support, and follow-up to individuals and families who have or may have inherited cancer susceptibility. Our genetic counseling services are provided in-person, by phone, or by video appointment. This genetic counselor may provide clinical services at Huntsman Cancer Institute and/or at one of our community or partnered clinics (including but not limited to Farmington, Sugarhouse, or South Jordan). This position will be part of a large multidisciplinary team including genetic counselors, physicians, research coordinators, genetic counseling assistants, and other. As part of our team, the genetic counselor will primarily provide clinical services as part of our Family Cancer Assessment Clinic, but over time will also be encouraged to participate in research opportunities or educational outreach. A hybrid working environment (part at home, part in-office) is available. Fluency in Spanish is an asset but not required.   • Master's degree in Genetic Counseling from an accredited program (current or by summer 2024)
  • Current or eligible to be licensed as a genetic counselor in the state of Utah (by summer 2024)

This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated vaccination requirements, or be approved for an exemption, prior to the first day of work. We protect out patients, coworkers, and community by requiring all patient-sensitive employees to be immunized according to CDC standards and hospital policy. Limited exemptions may be made for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations.

Responsibilities

  • Performs genetic risk assessments by collecting and evaluating medical and family histories.

  • Analyzes and interprets information obtained from patient, medical records, and resource materials.

  • Evaluates complex medical and genetic literature and incorporates it into clinical practice.

  • Explains testing options, procedures, test results, and their implications; performs psychosocial assessment during genetic consultation and provides grief and crisis counseling as needed.

  • Works with health care team in development and implementation of the care plan.

  • Advises patients and families regarding financial and community resources.

  • Coordinates the ordering of genetic testing, reporting of results, and communication of results to the patient and referring providers.

  • Evaluates outcomes and modifies testing or medical recommendations.

  • Facilitates involvement of treatment team members, timely reports, and participation in team meetings.

  • Participates in genetics education at the University of Utah and of community health care providers. Supervises genetic counseling trainees after 1 year of practice.

  • Recruits and consents patients to appropriate research, collects study data, and actively participates in the analysis and interpretation of research data.

  • Ability to promote the facilitation of open and accurate communication among patients, their families, referral providers, payers and the health care team.

Minimum Qualifications

Required

Current license as a Genetic Counselor in the State of Utah.

Master's degree in Genetic Counseling from an accredited program or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).

Preferred

Licensure to practice in a clinical field.

Preferences

Licensed or eligible for genetic counseling licensure in the state of Utah

Board certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling (or achieving board certification within two consecutive board certification exam cycles from the hire date)

Ability to work independently
