Administers and influences clinical care for Student Led Clinic programming, including teaching and curriculum for medical students and delivering preventative screening services, education, and outreach to vulnerable populations, contributing to the wellness of local communities.

The Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) is the primary federal agency for improving access to healthcare services for people who are uninsured, isolated, or medically vulnerable. HRSA is supporting the University of Utah School of Medicine to develop this medical education project designed to prepare and encourage medical students to choose residencies and careers in primary care that serve tribal communities, rural communities, and/or medically underserved communities (MUCs) after they graduate. Funding from HRSA for this project expires on June 30, 2025, and financial support for this position cannot be assured after that time and may be terminated.

Responsibilities

Teaching Responsibilities

  • Share knowledge with medical students on their experience working with the student-led clinic communities provide practical examples of health disparities and illustrate how social determinants of health influence healthcare decisions.

  • Guide and teach medical students to assess patients' needs for housing, food, transportation, and other social services and help by providing the necessary support.

  • Be instrumental in providing clinical support and teaching students how to effectively communicate with patients from diverse backgrounds in the student-led clinic environment.

  • Use cases from the student-led clinic as case studies for students to study, and to be presented during intersession days.

  • Help medical students develop cultural humility by fostering an attitude of respect, curiosity, and self-reflection. Encouraging students to actively listen, learn from community members, and recognize their own biases and limitations. Through this experience, students will understand the importance of tailoring care to individual needs and preferences.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide health counseling and education to increase knowledge of self-sufficiency.

  • Advance measurement data to advance health equity.

  • Help clients identify their health goals; and work closely with patients, students, and wellness coaches to help patients determine the best course of action for good health.

  • Provide patients with the care they need, CHWs work closely with an interprofessional team that includes doctors, nurses, students, and pharmacists.

  • Identify and help coordinate community events and workshops.

  • Participate in various community events helping community members with diabetes education and health needs.

  • Provide outreach to potential and existing clients in the community and at events.

  • Work with staff and volunteers to establish trusting relationships with clients while providing support and encouragement.

  • Complete the client's electronic intake questionnaire and screening assessment.

  • Make regular follow-up calls and assist patients with follow-up appointments.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related area plus three years of experience in budget, grant and program management or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required. Develops and implements program ideas into successful academic and research programs; demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.
