Atomic Machines is on Earth to radically advance humanity's command over matter. Our mission is real-time bits-to-atoms manufacturing of anything at any scale, and to that end, we're developing an entirely new digital micro-device manufacturing platform that is going to redefine how things are made, and do so while simultaneously enabling the rapid creation at any scale of new classes of machines - think medical micro-robotics, true lab-on-chip microfluidics, tunable antennas, ultrafast high-power and high-frequency RF switching devices and many more. The first device we are building with our platform has exceptional large-scale product/market fit and commercial traction, and we are pushing hard to share it with the world. Our offices are in Berkeley and Santa Clara, California.

About the role:

As a Prototype Machinist, you will be responsible for making parts from start to finish in our machine shop in Berkeley. This includes ordering tooling and materials, process development, CAM programming, fixture design, manufacturing the parts on the machines, metrology / inspection, and coordinating post-processing if necessary. You will also provide feedback on designs to make manufacturing faster, easier, and more repeatable. You will think quickly, produce quality work, and anticipate concerns before they become blockers. You will spend time with engineers to understand the workflow of their projects. Additionally, you will collaborate with a small team of machinists in charge of keeping the shop clean, safe, and organized, enforcing shop policies, and training staff.

What You'll Do:

  • Program CNC mills (3&5 axis) and Lathes using CAM to make parts to design specifications, often including tight tolerances and GD&T requirements.

  • Set up and run CNC machines to complete jobs, adjusting programs and offsets as necessary to produce quality parts.

  • Clean, deburr, and inspect finished parts.

  • Schedule and prioritize job requests based on program needs.

  • Conduct design reviews with engineers to advise on best practices for DFM (design for manufacturing).

  • Keep stock of materials and parts needed for efficient shop operation such as managing inventory of tools, disposal of waste, etc.

What you'll need:

  • 3+ years of experience working in prototype/high-mix machine shops.

  • Experience with CNC machining using multi-axis (4+) milling and turning centers.

  • Strong understanding of additional fabrication tools and processes (laser cutting, welding, waterjet, wire-EDM, 3D printing, precision grinding, lapping, etc).

  • Experience making parts to print specifications, deburring/cleaning, and delivering parts to internal customers.

  • Experience with creating and manipulating parts in CAD (Fusion, Solidworks, NX, etc) and CAM (creating toolpaths in Fusion, HSMWorks, NXCAM, MasterCAM, etc).

  • Experience using a task management tool (Airtable, JobBoss, or similar) to track and schedule jobs.

  • Experience working with various materials such as metals, ceramics, polymers, composites, etc.

  • Experience with basic metrology and working knowledge of GD&T.

  • Knowledge of and experience training on safe working practices for using machinery.

  • Experience using manual machines such as mills, lathes, drill presses, and saws.

  • Well-versed using hand tools.

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
