Position Summary

PG&E is beginning our journey on implementing Digital Substations (Example - IEC 61850). This position will be focused on leading all aspects of Protection technical design, PRC Compliance, and Protection performance of Digital Substations. The successful candidate will work closely with other technical experts from Automation, Test Department, IT, and others. Previous experience in this area is essential. Additional expectations, as a Principal Protection Engineer, are described in the Job Responsibilities.

Oversees all aspects the 500kv protection and control systems and Remedial Action Schemes installed and owned by PG&E. Specifies, designs, and applies protective relay packages for reliable and secure operation of transmission and distribution systems. Provides system support for departments that interface with protection schemes. Develops testing procedures. Performs fault and disturbance analysis, system modeling, documentation maintenance, and audits of protection equipment. Coordinates information exchange with other utilities and regulatory bodies.

This position is hybrid, working from your remote office and San Ramon based on business needs.

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.

A reasonable salary range is:

Bay Area Minimum: $151,000

Bay Area Midpoint: $204,000

Bay Area Maximum: $257,000

California Minimum: $143,000

California Midpoint: $194,000

California Maximum: $244,000

Job Responsibilities

• Acts as Subject Matter Expert (SME) in various operations systems areas and provides oversight to less senior engineers.

• Plans, architects and designs complete systems in development.

• Manages multiple internal and external clients and acts as a top tier of support to less senior engineers.

• Frequently serves as a lead in developing and authoring codes, regulations and/or national standards.

• Conceives and investigates areas in which system protection precedents are not tested.

• Contributes new designs and techniques that are regarded as major advances in the company and/or industry.

• Applies broad and extensive business understanding of technical issues and impacts the strategic direction and policies of the company.

• Provides high-level advice and expertise to upper management on an ongoing basis.

Qualifications

Minimum:

• Masters Degree in Engineering-Electrical or job-related discipline or equivalent experience

• Experience in system protection, 12 years

• PE-Professional Engineer license

Desired:

• IEEE-Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers certification
