SUMMARY: This course is a food service hospitality program. This course covers such topics as: management, communication, nutrition, marketing, global cuisine, cost control and cooking methods. ProStart is a nationally certified program that introduces students to a wide variety of careers in the hospitality industry. The curriculum is based on a study of food preparation, lodging, customer service and business management. Students can earn a national certificate that will give them college credit and scholarship opportunities. To earn the national certificate, students will need to obtain 400 hours, earn a 3.0 or higher in both classes and pass both year 1 and year 2 national exams. ProStart is administered through partnership with the state restaurant association. This role requires the educator to market/implement the work/internship component of the program to students and families, work with the local state restaurant association to recruit industry partners, administer the ProStart National exam to students who are interested in earning the certificate, attend ProStart training, provide fall updates on the number of students working, etc., provide assistance with long-term tracking/metrics of students who graduate from the ProStart program at this school, inform students of the scholarship opportunities available to them from NRAEF. Instructors will use the ProStart curriculum and materials in their entirety.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • This is a Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathway. Educator Requirements include coursework and experience in any of the following combinations:

Content Knowledge (Applicants must have A or B):

A. 24 semester hours of related postsecondary coursework from a regionally accredited institution verified on an official transcript to include a minimum of 3 semester hours of content coursework in the area listed as REQUIRED below, and 21 semester hours of content related coursework from the areas listed as RELATED which include: REQUIRED (3 Semester Hours Required) Food safety and sanitation RELATED (Total of 21 Semester Hours) Nutrition, Food science, Chemistry, Purchasing and/or accounting, Food service operations, Food principles and preparation, Food safety and sanitation, Hospitality industry, Hospitality law, Hospitality sales Economics. OR

B. Applicants who provide a valid and current state CTE license or certification in the appropriate occupational area

Occupational Experience (Applicants must have either option 1, 2 or 3):

Credit for student teaching up to 800 hours, in the content area, may be applied to either occupational or teaching experience

1.If you hold a Bachelor's degree or higher: 2,000 hours of verified occupational (non-teaching) experience in the content area within the last seven years OR

2.If you hold less than a Bachelor's degree: 4,000 hours of verified occupational (non-teaching) experience in the content area within the last seven years OR

3.3 years verified teaching experience in the content area within the last seven years (full-time is defined as 51% or more of a teaching schedule dedicated to teaching in the content area).

Requirements

If the applicant does not currently hold Career and Technical (CTE) teaching authorization, the process to obtain that authorization involves verification of work experience and professional certifications or course work aligned with this industry instruction and finger printing.

  • Candidates with endorsements in CLDE, Bilingual Ed, Foreign Language, and/or sheltered content or other English Language instructional training desired

  • Be up to date on current learning theory and state of the art pedagogy in teaching.

  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal relationships with students, staff members, parents and administrators.

  • Has knowledge and experience of and/or willingness to gain knowledge of Competency-based Education approaches.

  • Must be able to read, write, and comprehend English

  • Bilingual desired.

  • Experience and/or skills working with culturally diverse populations desired.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Displays a thorough knowledge of the subject matter and the District's prescribed curriculum.

  • Plans instruction consistent with the District's curriculum for assigned subject areas/grade levels.

  • Plans for student differences and adjusts instruction to meet student needs.

  • Implements continuous system of evaluations and provides students with specific feedback.

  • Serves as facilitator and coordinator of learning.

  • Establishes an effective system for classroom discipline per Board Policy and building regulations.

  • Organizes students for effective instruction to maximize the learning time for all students.

  • Fulfills contractual and professional responsibilities.

  • Submits required student record reports.
