Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit

Facilities Operations has the responsibility of providing a wide range of services to all administrative departments, students programs, and all academic schools and departments. Services include all aspects of corrective and preventive maintenance, operations, grounds maintenance, housekeeping, utility infrastructure maintenance and operations, business operations, safety, regulatory compliance, project management, and renovations. These duties are conducted for a campus consisting of over 100 buildings totaling 6 million gross square feet on over 275 acres

Position Summary

This position is mainly responsible for completing various projects on campus, including, but not limited to: floor care, furniture moves, inclement weather coverage, absentee coverage, upholstery cleaning and deep cleaning of restrooms/locker rooms. This position also completes general and detail cleaning in academic, administrative, and performance buildings on campus. In addition, this position also provides good customer service and completes special projects. Supervisor may assign other job-related duties not specifically listed under essential tasks.

This position is a mandatory position as defined in the Adverse Weather and Emergency Event Policy.

Minimum Qualifications

Some knowledge of cleaning procedures, ability to follow instructions and to perform medium to heavy physical work; an equivalent combination of training and experience. Special certification may be required for some of these positions. Special note: this is a generalized representation of positions in this class and is not intended to identify essential functions per ADA. Examples of competencies are typical of the majority of positions, but may not be applicable to all functions.

Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, and Certificates Preferred Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • One to two years' experience in the use and care of floor care maintenance equipment

  • Valid driver's license is required

Special Projects/Floor Care/Additional Duties

Essential Tasks

  • Special Projects

  • a) Campus Special Projects: Performs periodic deep cleaning of campus restrooms, public areas, classrooms, and all other academic and administrative areas owned and/or operated by the University of North Carolina Greensboro. Utilizes various equipment such as (but not limited to): TFC-2000, Kaivac Cleaning Machines, Turboforce Restroom Cleaners, etc.

  • b) Exterior Building Projects: Responsible for outside areas (including porches) up to 25 feet from any building entrance. This includes outdoor waste receptacles, cigarette urns, pressure washing, leaf blowing/sweeping and aids in the evaluation of snow removal needs.

  • c) Moves: Coordinates with customer and communicates with supervision to ensure customer satisfaction. Utilizes departmental labor-saving equipment to ensure safe and effective transportation of university property. Adheres to the Departmental Moving SOP, especially in regards to evaluating the weight, time, number of items to be moved and availability of an elevator within the facility.


    1. Floor Care

  • a) Carpeted Floor Areas: Performs daily floor care tasks as assigned such as vacuuming and stain prevention. Performs periodic floor care tasks to include, but not limited extraction, bonneting and other processes deemed necessary or assigned by supervision.

  • b) Hard Surface Floor Areas: Dust mops daily and mops as scheduled to remove excess dirt and to preserve finish. Cleans baseboards regularly or as scheduled by supervisor. Use of labor saving equipment (scrubbers) is required if the equipment is available.

  • c) Periodic floor maintenance: Stripping, top scrubbing, refinishing, and other related tasks as assigned by supervision.

Essential Tasks

  • Transporting Equipment
  • a) Moving Equipment: Ability to safely move equipment across campus based upon business need for individual building, or department.
  • b) Broken/Damaged Equipment: File log in/out information to departmental maintenance technician and transport equipment to departmental maintenance shop for repairs. Upon completion of repair, transport equipment back into building.
  • c) Equipment Diagnosis: Ability to identify equipment deficiencies and resolve some equipment issues, i.e. clogged vacuum, broken vacuum belt, frayed cord and other small equipment breakdowns.

Essential Tasks

  • General Cleaning: Expected to perform general and detail cleaning in private and public areas to include (but not limited to): hallways, stairwells, elevators, restrooms/locker rooms, entrance areas, lobbies, gymnasiums, classrooms, lounges, auditoriums, dressing rooms, offices, suites, housekeeping areas and other areas per the assigned cleaning routine or as assigned by supervision.

  • Safety: Understands, notifies, and reports safety hazards and corrective actions that must be taken regarding the accident, as required by OSHA.

  • Training: Completes professional development instruction each fiscal year as directed.

  • Sustainability: Correctly utilizes recycling receptacles as instructed by OWRR to assist in UNCG's commitment to sustainability as a core value of institutional operations.

  • Performs advanced operations of equipment such as using restorers, buffers, auto scrubbers, burnishers, ready space machines for maintaining floors, removing and reapplying finish, spot cleaning, extracting carpet, etc.

  • Removes and properly disposes of recyclables including: office paper; cans; bottles; co-mingled and cardboard according to color coding chart.

  • Cleans and sanitizes on a daily basis all fixtures, showers, floors, exterior of dispensers' door push and kick plates, restroom receptacles, partitioners and rails. Monitors stairwells, entrance areas and common areas for cleanliness.

  • Dust mop and damp mop as needed. Vacuums carpets in common areas and entrance mats as needed.

  • Regularly checks for and cleans wall spots.

  • Performs high and low dusting.

  • Cleans hallway trash and recyclables receptacles.
