JOB SUMMARY:

This position requires expertise in the planning , design and construction of research and laboratory spaces. Serve as the research and laboratory expert and collaborate with Clemson Occupational and Environmental Safety. Provides project management for new construction and renovation projects. Manages successful completion of all projects assigned. Meets or exceeds the expectations for budget, schedule, quality, and safety while maintaining good relationships with customers and stakeholders.

Performs other duties as assigned.

JOB DUTIES:

30% - Essential

  • Technical Expertise:

Serve as a technical expert in collaboration with Clemson Occupational and Environmental Safety (OES) for all research laboratory space design and construction with an emphasis on laboratory / laboratory infrastructure design. Applicant should have technical expertise related to chemical and biological laboratory design, laboratory ventilation requirements, hazardous exhaust systems, laboratory life safety requirements, and building infrastructure required to service / maintain a wide variety of laboratory utilities and mission critical equipment. Applicant should have knowledge of codes and standards specific to laboratory design, construction and renovation including, but not limited to:

ANSI/ASSP Z9.5-2022, ANSI/ASHRAE 110-2016, ANSI/ISEA Z358.1-2014, IMC 510

NFPA 45, SEFA laboratory furniture and equipment standards, NIH Design Requirements Manual-2016s.

20% - Essential

  • Financial and Schedule Control:

PM maintains complete financial and schedule control of the project at all times. Accurate estimates are provided and updated, particularly when project starts are delayed. Maintains an accurate schedule and regularly updates customers and key stakeholders of the schedule status. Keeps in contact with contractors to ensure schedule compliance. Informs all team members when any changes are proposed to the schedule. Prepares contract and bid documents, reviews amendments & change orders, and approves payment requests. Performs continual on-site inspection to ensure timeliness and budget expectations are met. Maintains accurate records of construction documents to include cost accounting, payments, change orders, purchase orders, contracts, etc. Ensures that all project work has a contract or Purchase Order number before the work begins.

20% - Essential

  • Project Management: Strategizes each stage of the construction lifecycle, from inception to conclusion. Establishes project objectives and scope through thoroughly examining feasibility studies or consultations with clients. Drafts comprehensive agreements covering all project phases, ensuring clarity from conception to closure. Oversees proposal selection and provides recommendations for bids. Orchestrates and supervises projects using proven project management methodologies. Identifies and assesses potential risks, implementing strategies to mitigate them effectively. Produces status reports and delivers updates to project stakeholders, sponsors, and advocates. Manages procurement processes, offering recommendations for enhancements as necessary. Review payment applications and verify invoice certifications. Enforces the Consolidated Procurement Code for both major improvements and minor project procurements. Provides guidance to design and construction professionals regarding State and University regulations, including compliance with Clemson's Standards (Green Book). Facilitates completing all requisite project documentation, including accurate logging of project management hours and regular entries in the Notes Log.

20% - Essential

  • Coordination and Consultation:

Serves as a single-source contact during all phases of projects. Leads in the coordination of design development, modification and/or review of laboratory planning concepts and solutions. Maintains an amicable relationship with the customer. Conducts all project meetings, including but not limited to bidding processes, design, Page Turn, and construction meetings. Negotiates contracts for design and construction services. Follows the "Turnover Workgroup" process.

Develops strong working relationships between Facilities (Trades and Zone Supervisors, Project Managers) and non-Facilities (Fire Marshal, OES, Access & Equity, Police, Fire, Parking, and Office of State Engineers) partners to promote review input on design documents and that the A/E responds to all comments.

10% - Essential

  • Team Collaboration:

Ensures adherence to both State and Clemson standards while maintaining open communication with Clemson faculty and staff. Keeps the client well-informed about project advancements and necessary design modifications. Offers direction to architects and the general contractor to align the project with the predetermined budget and meet milestone deadlines.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in related fields including but not limited to: chemistry, biological science, architecture, engineering or construction science, and experience managing large projects of moderate complexity and risk.

Experience: 5 years' experience in Project Management and experience in the design and construction of laboratory and research facilitates.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

Education

  • Master's Degree in Engineering or Architecture; registered architect or engineer. Certified Healthcare Manager (CCHM)

Work Experience: 10+ years of experience in the planning, design and construction of research laboratories.

Expected Salary Range: ($ 80,000.00 - $ 95,000.00)

Normal Operations

Required to follow emergency facility closure directives, and not normally expected work on-site during emergency situations.
