East Lansing Categories: Research/Scientific, Administrative Professionals- AP, Full Time (90-100%), Union, Remote-Friendly Working/Functional Title Project Grant Writer Position Summary Senior Life Sciences Project Grant Writer sought for the Department of Medicine at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. This role will be responsible for working alongside faculty in the Department of Medicine (DOM) in the grant proposal and writing process, leading the full range of technical activities required to conceptualize, formulate, prepare, and deliver grant proposals to NIH, PCORI, DoD, other government agencies, and nonprofits.

This individual will be responsible for producing the highest quality written scientific documents for funding applications and publications, including writing, editing, and proofreading grant proposals, as well as providing guidance to DOM faculty to ensure timely proposals to funding agencies. The Project grant writer must be deadline-driven and able to oversee multiple concurrent projects per cycle, each with varying deadlines for execution. Responsibilities include: Work withDOM faculty to assess alignment between granting agencies' (RFA or study sections) research goals and Investigators' proposal roadmap and technical focus; work closely with DOM faculty and their teams to transform ideas into grant proposals; support content development, including consultation on refining grant ideas, to formulating abstract and specific aims and developing grant outlines. Help conceptualize and then lead execute high quality, clear, and compellingly written grant applications, translating highly scientific content in terms accessible to diverse scientific reviewers; work with DOM faculty to establish grant proposal benchmarks, such as timelines for preliminary results and sub-aims drafts, and assign them to individual investigators, making sure that individual investigators are on track with their assignments to meet the deadline; manage various deadlines and deliverables for multiple primary investigators concurrently; editing of grant drafts to ensure that grants are well-organized, well-written, and adhere to appropriate conventions of standard written English and standard medical writing; ensuring grants are responsive to the funding agency guidelines and requirements; editing of manuscript drafts to ensure that scientific manuscripts are well-organized, well-written, and adhere to appropriate conventions of standard written English and standard medical writing; proofread assigned material to ensure that it matches the approved copy and that the format, organization, and graphics are consistent; shepherd drafts through all review stages, including peer-reviewed comments; provide training and educational support to new grant writers/editors as needed, including conducting educational courses and workshops; assist with assembling components of a proposal for each client as necessary, including, but not limited to, large institutional grants.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Business administration, Finance, or a research-related field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in research administration including the area of pre- or post-award processes, or related field such as regulatory administration; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. This job requires completion of Essentials of Research Administration (MSU Certificate) or equivalent within one year of hire. Desired Qualifications Ph.D. preferred.

A Master's Degree in biology, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, or other life science, or a relevant background is essential; a minimum of 5-years of scientific writing experience, preferably in a healthcare/research/academic environment; proven expertise in writing grants, including NIH and PCORI proposals, and/or experience with other funding mechanisms.
