We are looking for a Project Engineer to join our team in Fredericksburg, VA to grow our organization and move into the future.

The Project Engineer manages the company capital projects from design and specifications, project planning and management, bidding, vendor management and budget management.


  • Responsible for company capital projects and spending

  • Assist with RFP preparation

  • Develops and maintains a schedule and budget for projects

  • Develops project objectives by reviewing project proposals and plans; conferring with project owner and management

  • Determines project responsibilities by identifying project phases and elements; work with management to assign personnel to phases and elements; reviewing bids from contractors

  • Determines project specifications by studying product design, customer requirements, and performance standards; completing technical studies; preparing cost estimates

  • Determines project schedule by studying project plan and specifications; calculating time requirements; sequencing project elements

  • Maintains project schedule by monitoring project progress; coordinating activities; resolving problems

  • Support project plan by reviewing design, specifications, and plan and schedule changes; recommending actions

  • Optimize project costs by administering and managing contractor contracts

  • Prepares project status reports to customer, project team, and management

  • Attend project meetings with management, contractors, and others parties needed to accomplish projects

  • Work with Safety Manager to develop any safety programs needed for projects

  • Other duties may be assigned

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management or Engineering and a minimum of three years of relevant management and working experience as an Engineer

  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of lean concepts

  • Ability to work through complex problems and implement effective solutions

  • Ability to work in an office environment as well as in the field

Responsibilities: * Reviews project plans and proposals, then works with management to develop project objectives. Identifies project responsibilities by determining the phases and elements of the project. Calculates time frames and sequences the stages of the project. * Manage subcontract administration and permanent material supplier through monitoring of correspondence, issue change orders and pay sheet * Reviews subcontractors; interviews and assigns personnel to specific phases and elements of the project. Through project coordination meetings and other forms of communication, oversees and coordinates the technical aspects of the project. * Prepares and distributes a description and timeline of the project. * Studies product design, customer requirements performance standards, then determines project specifications. Presents cost estimates and performance standards. Conducts tests assuring safe and satisfactory product performance. * Prepares status reports and regularly monitors budgets, contractors and schedules. Allocates project resources appropriately; approves expenditures; employee contractor contracts. Keeps an accurate record and electronic data base of all elements of the projects. * Presents procedures, rules and regulations to those involved in the project; maintains a safe, clean and productive environment through enforcing procedures. Maintains project integrity and reputation through compliance with high standards of workplace safety, budgeting, employee supervision and personnel management and as well as engineering best practices. Qualifications * Bachelor's Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering from an accredited institution and 5+ years experience on heavy civil projects * Or 7+ years heavy civil related experience and/or training * Resource monitoring techniques (i.e. cost accounting, basic estimating) and construction technology, process systems and/or structures experience preferred * Previous experience working on large highway infrastructure projects INDL Flatiron Construction Corp.
