Job Description

PURPOSE:

The principal goal of the Project Engineer is to install improved systems and methodology to confirm the quality and dimensional compliance of all inspections meet both PCC and customer specifications. The Project Engineer is responsible for improving the layout inspection department efficiency by identifying and implementing new technologies. The solutions will involve both hardware and software solutions to improve throughput, repeatability, and mitigate risks. The Project Engineer will also coordinate department scheduling to meet production goals. The Project Engineer is responsible for the overall department accuracy for all information and generated reports and documentation.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Improve inspection accuracy and repeatability.

  • Work with internal layout inspection technical resources to identify opportunities for improvement for both inspection methods and reporting methodology.

  • Improve current methods and implement new automated data processing methods to maintain data accuracy.

  • Implement additional CMM and non-contact scanning technology.

  • Identify opportunities to improve the gathering, storage, and recall of data.

  • Support daily, weekly, monthly targets for throughput by coordinating department activities that include production inspection timing and scheduling, inspection request planning, and reviewing of inspection reports.

  • Focal point for all department scheduling activities including production and first article inspections.

  • Provide on demand technical assistance for all layout inspection operations.

  • Work with finishing supervisors and leads to assess risk to schedule.

  • Manage department capital equipment acquisition projects.

  • May be assigned to special cost reduction initiatives as part of a multi-discipline team.

REPORTING RELATIONS:

This position reports to the Engineer Manager.

SPECIAL SKILLS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Organizational and communication skills are critical to this position.

  • Interpreting blueprints and applying proper GD&T principles.

  • Analytical skills are critical for this leadership position.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelors Degree in engineering highly preferred.

  • 3+ years of of leading projects in a manufacturing required. Casting experience prefered.

  • 3+ years experience of proven application of blueprint interpretation

  • Geometric Dimensional & Tolerancing training preferred

  • Understanding of programming methodology

  • Desired understanding of statical process capability analysis

  • Broad knowledge of mechanical, industrial, materials science principles

  • Must have good understanding of data processing, MS Excel, Minitab

  • Must have demonstrated ability to interact with manufacturing on technical issue

The United States Navys goals for more capable and more affordable submarines are shared and met by Electric Boat engineers as cutting-edge electric drive propulsion system components are developed, integrated, tested, and delivered with the utmost importance placed on first-time quality, in a timeframe that supports the needs of the United States Navy.</p><p>Unique opportunities exist to advance technology centric to propulsion control, which presently consists of a highly diverse team of engineers and support staff that hold technical knowledge key to delivery of robust, high-performance control systems for the COLUMBIA Class. These opportunities are being expanded beyond the COLUMBIA Class, and require engineers to perform tasking centric to component design through internal research and development.</p><p>Candidates may be required to travel (domestically), based on needs of the program. Flexible Work Arrangements are offered by Electric Boat, but vary on the amount of classified material that the candidate interacts with.</p><p>Multiple roles are available for candidates with interests in either technical or programmatic support for design, development, and test of control system components in a model-based systems engineering approach.
