  • BS in Chemical or Materials Engineering or equivalent experience.

  • Knowledge and experience with electrostatic application fundamentals for powder and liquid coatings.

  • Knowledge and experience of chemical engineering and analytical laboratory testing fundamentals of chemicals, coatings and coating applications.

  • Ability to clearly communicate via both written and verbal communications to promote ideas and methods to all levels of the organization and foster teamwork with the shop floor personnel.

  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft office applications.

Job summary:

  • Our Ultradur Finish is a highly engineered, high performance coating applied to numerous product offerings. The Process Engineering team is responsible for the specifying the equipment and processes to properly apply the Ultradur Finish to meet the product specifications. The Project Engineer will work on all aspects of the process from pre-treatment to prime painting to topcoat. The Project Engineer will also perform or specify test methods for product certification. The Project Engineer will work on new equipment as well as engineering improvement efforts on existing equipment.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Maintain and monitor the manufacturing coating application system, including developing and implementing quality standards, operation start-up, routine operation, routine maintenance and safe shutdown of operations.

  • Seek out opportunities for continuous improvements and developing innovative solutions by proposing and implementing process improvements and performing project management of capital equipment upgrades with a focus on improving our Key Performance Indicators.

  • Research, test, and implement new surface preparation, cleaning, and coating materials to help improve the company's impact on the environment while maintaining exceptional long-term coating performance.

  • Coordinate and conduct chemical analysis of protective surface coatings and the process quality with internal or external laboratories. This would include but is not limited to implementing regular quality checks by production, submitting quarterly QC samples, and developing an external weathering correlation study to accelerated testing required by industry specifications.

  • Maintain and develop written documents to test and monitor the finishing system processes, coating specifications, and quality information and data.

  • Perform hands-on troubleshooting of production problems, using root-cause analysis to develop long-term solutions to process and equipment issues.

  • Maintain and monitor operator preventative maintenance procedures, developing standard work documents, and providing shop training.

  • Serve as the technical consultant to external departments and other company facilities on the coating system, with regard to relevant material usage or application, and in regulatory areas of OSHA, EPA, ASTM, ANSI, SSPC, FDA, and MIL standards.

Mars Wrigley Confectionery is currently seeking an Engineer Process Development - Gum, located in Chicago, IL JOB PURPOSE/OVERVIEW The R&D Engineer Process Development is a key partner for delivery of our innovation pipeline across multiple technology platforms within Gum and Mints. This role is responsible for qualification, commercialization and start-up of new and improved products, processes, and ingredients such that they are delivered on time and in accordance with specification. In addition, this position is expected to lead and execute process development and ensure flawless implementation into the manufacturing environment while providing expertise across multiple technology disciplines. Significant collaboration with Product Development, Technology, Global Engineering, Supply Chain, and Quality will be required. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES * Provide process development and validation expertise while enabling the delivery of the specified product performance targets and attributes for Gum and Mint products in order to deliver the pipeline. * Initiate and lead test plan development, test execution and data analysis to quantify key process equipment parameters and fundamental mechanisms at prototype, Pilot Plant, and factory scale. * Identify and evaluate innovative processing options based on product attributes for Gum and Mints products, including evaluation based on technical and economic feasibility. * Deliver scalable process specifications for all technology platforms collaboratively developed with Product Development, Technology, and Supply Chain to achieve exceptional product attribute targets and ensure superior product quality and food safety. * Delivery of IP for technical insulation of new technology * Build/maintain internal and external global networks within the technology community * Initiates and coordinates trials for Commissioning, Validation, and Start-up planning and execution. * Connects with peers other regions, other R&D functions and CBU's to share best practices and accelerate the global deployment of new innovations.
