CHICAGO-BASED - HYBRID ROLE WFH PLUS CHICAGO HQ OFFICE

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Project Engineer is responsible for the design of tank and freight car repairs, analyzing fleet data and writing appropriate specifications and procedures. This position requires sound engineering fundamentals and judgement while working with Safety, AAR & DOT regulations, Company Fleet Engineering Standards and customer requirements.

Primary responsibilities and/or essential functions include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides engineering support to repair facilities as required.

  • Maintains knowledge of regulatory rules, AAR practices and Fleet Engineering Standards.

  • Acts with full authority to implement engineering solutions and work specifications on rail car repairs while leveraging internal and external resources, exercising sound engineering judgment and ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements.

  • Provides appropriate data and engineering analysis to support inspections and repairs of fleet tank and freight cars to maximize safety and reliability.

  • Reviews repair procedures and maintenance records to identify and/or address non-conformances.

  • Ensures designs, specifications and procedures are updated to take advantage of new techniques, materials and regulatory requirements.

  • Full responsibility for success of assigned rail car maintenance projects:

  • Gathers background information and interfaces with vendors, customers and suppliers in support of projects.

  • Identifies, develops, and gathers resources necessary to complete projects.

  • Develops, implements, and communicates, an operational plan for completing projects.

  • Monitors progress and performance of projects.

  • Takes action to resolve operational problems and minimize delays.

  • Coordinates the resolution of all open technical issues on projects.

  • Performs other tasks as assigned including failure analysis, special design projects, troubleshooting and resolving customer issues and making technical presentations.

  • Works with cross-functional teams to accomplish company-wide objectives.

  • Participates in and actively supports quality projects and activities and Responsible Care initiatives to ensure that the Company achieves its goals.

SKILLS / SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong project management: can set priorities, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects concurrently.X

  • Solid mathematical and analytical skills combined with the ability to read and understand precision technical plans, drawings and models.

  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering design and manufacturing principles.

  • Understanding of engineering analysis concepts and techniques including stress analysis and reliability analysis.

  • Ability to wear as required safety equipment such as safety shoes, safety glasses, hard hats, ear plugs and respirators while at Repair Shops.

  • Ability to travel up to 10% based on project needs.

The incumbent works to meet internal and external customer expectations at all times by fully applying oneself to the task involved, preventing errors, and developing and implementing personal quality improvement projects. In addition, the incumbent is required to understand the Responsible Care Management System and actively participate in activities outlined therein.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering required; Mechanical Engineering preferred.

  • Minimum of 2 years of related work experience.

  • Experience in 3-D CAD modeling; Solid Edge preferred.

  • Prior rail industry experience is beneficial.

  • Knowledge of DOT regulatory rules and AAR practices preferred.
