Alaska heavy civil contractor is looking for a Project Engineer experienced in heavy civil construction. Job locations are remote areas within Alaska.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Working knowledge of project plans, specifications and subcontracts. Work directly with project owner, subcontracts and suppliers. Daily requirements are purchase orders, daily correspondence, shop drawings, submittals and all other project related documents.

  • Storm Water Pollution and Prevention Plan (SWPPP) Management and oversight of workplace environmental operations.

  • Help the project manager ensure timely project completion through project scheduling, expediting of materials deliveries and the management of material and document submittals/approvals.

  • Project quantity tracking.

  • Scheduling of the project according to specification requirements for Critical Path Method (CPM) schedules.

  • Implement and monitor a traffic control program for the project site.

  • Record keeping and cost coding of employee hours and project budget.

  • Job site safety management, work directly with safety manager to comply with OSHA, MSHA and FMCSR.


Minimum Requirements:

  • Experience in heavy civil construction preferred or enrollment in a construction management program or civil engineering.

  • Competent user of Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel programs.

  • Familiarity and experience with Primavera scheduling software.

  • Familiarity and experience with HCSS HeavyJob a plus.

  • Traffic control supervisor certification.

  • State of Alaska Certified Erosion and Sediment Control Lead (AK-CESCL).

  • Excellent communication skills -- written and oral.

  • Organized, dependable, proactive and punctual.

  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a variety of personality types.

  • Flexible and willing to travel to various job sites, mostly in remote Alaska, with potential for other locations.

Summary: Support construction activities by implementing the following: planning, organizing and implementing those management duties, project controls systems, engineering interface, subcontract and materials management, purchasing and scheduling. Essential Functions: * Ensure Contract Document Logs are established and maintained * Ensure status reports on RFIs, Submittals and other Documents are prepared and presented * Write effective scopes of work for bid packages * Effectively issue Request for Quotations and follow up with Trade Contractors * Timely document field quality activities * Prepare change management reports, estimates and other cost report documents * Establish and maintain the project quality files and documentation systems * Continually promote organizational change initiatives, suggests new ideas, and adapt to work within new structures and processes * Continually seek to understand customer goals and needs and act with a sense of urgency in meeting customer needs and demonstrating value * Develop industry relationships and expand professional networks that have potential to generate opportunities for UIC Construction * Ability and willingness to abide by company Code of Conduct on a daily basis. * Ability to create and maintain construction schedules with critical path methods Knowledge and Critical Skill/Expertise: * Excellent communications skills, oral and written. * Excellent interpersonal skills. * Analytical and problem solving skills. * Be able to handle stress and work in high pressure environments or under difficult conditions. * Requires a working knowledge of engineering and construction-related processes, as well as some familiarity with industry practices. * Familiarity with other PC software packages typically associated with engineering and construction. * Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization, as well as with customers and vendors. * Detail oriented with the ability to efficiently analyze and organize significant amounts of information regarding plan layouts, material deliveries and jobsite productivities. * Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook). * Proficient with Microsoft Projects scheduling software (Primavera Suretrack is also beneficial) * Experience with Timberline Project Management software preferred * Ability to read and interpret drawings and specifications * Ability to meet deadlines and multi-task in fast paced environment. Requirements Required Experience: * Must have excellent PC skills in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Projects and Experience with Primavera * Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Construction Management, related degree and/or equivalent work experience. * 2 years of work experience working for a General Contractor successfully supporting similar key responsibilities meeting and exceeding performance expectations. * Knowledgeable of safety and relevant OSHA requirements and regulations. * Knowledge of web based project management software tools for managing and tracking projects and tasks. Physical Demands: * Dexterity and good motor skills. * Performance of the required duties will require physical ability to climb permanent and temporary stairs. * Passenger use of construction personnel hoists, ability to climb ladders and negotiate work areas under construction. * Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. * Performing this job requires use of hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, sit, talk and hear, stand, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. * Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds while performing the duties of this job.
