Job Summary:

Our Lady of the Lake University's Environmental Science and Sustainability Program is seeking a Project Director to join an exciting, unique, and transformative effort that will initiate with the creation of the Center for Community Futures (or, 2C Futures); a multi- and trans-disciplinary center that partners with communities across the world to benchmark today's most vexing community-based challenges, co-create shared infrastructure futures, and extracts new lines of inquiry to embed all forms of sustainability into community planning processes. Applicants for this position must have a Ph.D. and strong practical experience with sustainability development and climate research.

Essential Functions:

  • Dynamically apply a range of entrepreneurial skills from data analysis, community engagement, sales and branding, to budgetary management.

  • Lead and chart 2C Futures to become the exemplar for how education and communities transform the livelihoods of its people

  • Work closely with the City of San Antonio, as partner one, we are utilizing the latest advancements and trends in community sustainability, resiliency, energy efficiency, and topics that include smart cities, renewable energy, data analytics, among others.

  • Use our BAFT* and EMiTT tools to make informed decisions regarding their sustainable futures coupled with pathways to tracking and achieving climate actions.

  • BAFT = baseline, accounting, and forecasting tool. Intended for measuring, benchmarking, and forecasting community-wide energy and material flows, and GHG emissions.

  • EMiTT = effective mitigation transition tool. Models, tracks, and quantifies climate action mitigation targets in a dynamic real-time application.

  • Work both independently and as part of a research team.

  • Conduct multi- and trans-disciplinary projects.

  • Prepare original manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals

  • Prepare written progress and final reports for community partners

  • Participate in writing research grant proposals.

  • Training new students and overseeing projects.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and evaluate sustainability and environmental impact regulation compliance

  • Identify inefficiencies or areas of improvement related to environmental impact

  • Write reports detailing results of evaluations and present them to the team, along with recommendations for improvement

  • Set guidelines or benchmarks for a company's environmental impact

  • Ensure compliance with the agreement between OLLU and the City of San Antonio.

  • Lead training sessions or workshops on sustainability practices for students assigned to the project(s).

The Project Director will be measured and evaluated by a range of quantitative and qualitative measures, including:

Student Success: Number of 2C Futures scholars recruited, retained, and graduated.

Scholarship: Number of conference presentations, city council or municipal meetings, manuscripts submitted and published.

Operational Excellence: Partnerships secured, especially revenue generating partnerships.

Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Successful candidates should have several of the following skills:

  • Background in environmental science and sustainability.

  • Knowledge of relevant environmental regulations and policies

  • Passion for sustainability and a drive to make a positive impact on the environment and society.

  • Building and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Background in climate action planning.

  • Experience with greenhouse gas (GHG) emission accounting.

  • Experience with Material Flow Analysis (MFA) and Life-Cycle Assessments (LCA) preferred.

  • Proven track record of critical thinking skills, analytical skills, problem solving, and creativity.

  • Programming experience in Python, R, C++ or other programing language preferred.

  • Strong intrapersonal skills and ability to work independently and in a collaborative team.

  • Strong communication skills and fluency in both spoken and written English.

  • Record of quality publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Education and Experience:

  • Ph.D. in sustainability, environmental science, or related field, required.

  • Demonstrated experience in a sustainability role or related field

  • Ability to analyze sustainability and environmental data and create reports

  • Willingness to conduct environmental research and create policies from the research
