Additional Comments Regarding Position

About the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture

The Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture-a division of the College of Charleston Libraries-is located on the former site of the Avery Normal Institute in Charleston, South Carolina. From 1865 to 1954, this historic secondary school and teacher training institute provided Black students with dual preparation for professional careers and leadership roles, and it served as a hub for Charleston's Black community. In 1985, the Avery Institute of Afro-American History and Culture-which was founded by Avery Normal Institute alumni-worked with the College of Charleston to establish the Avery Research Center. Its purpose was to preserve the legacy of Black people, organizations and businesses in the South Carolina Lowcountry. As a part of the College of Charleston library system for over 35 years, the Avery Research Center has collected the records of educators, activists, organizations, institutions, artists and more from the South Carolina Lowcountry and beyond.

About Liberating Literacies

Liberatory Literacies will honor 160 years of Black education at the Avery Normal School, the Avery Institute of Afro-American History and Culture and the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture. The project staff will organize, catalog and digitize unprocessed institutional records of the Avery Institute of Afro-American History and Culture, the Avery Research Center and papers of Averyites, who are alumni of the secondary school and teacher training institute.

The institutional records of the Avery Research Center document its administrative, operational and programmatic initiatives and activities, as well as its impact on the understanding of Charleston's role in Black history from 1990 to the present. The Averyite records document the professional and community service and accomplishments of numerous Avery students and graduates from 1868 to 2021. These records provide information on how the education and support they received as students empowered them to achieve their goals and improve the lives of others.
