The Project Coordinator will work on an international research study with researchers at MGH Global Health as well as with research team members and collaborators in Mbarara, Uganda. The study is an interdisciplinary public health research study and implementation project that aims to improve the lives and livelihoods of the 5,000 residents of Nyakabare Parish in Mbarara, Uganda. The core of the research infrastructure is an ongoing, population-based social network cohort with a biannual community health fair. Smaller sub-studies are incorporated on an intermittent basis and, in the past, have included qualitative and mixed methods research related to water insecurity, parenting, child development, and rural livelihoods.

This position is ideal for someone intending to pursue further study in epidemiology, global health research, medicine, psychology, or public health.

The MGH Global Health Research Group is comprised of Harvard Medical School faculty who direct a large portfolio of NIH-funded international biomedical research projects. The multi-disciplinary research program spans clinical trials as well as social science and translational research, with an overarching mission to improve health and quality of life for vulnerable populations in resource-limited settings. By leveraging the 200-year legacy of leadership and innovation at MGH and long-standing, bidirectional global partnerships, MGH Global Health and its partners employ a generation-spanning perspective to enhance care for the world's most vulnerable populations and to identify and develop future leaders in global health academics.

This job posting seeks to identify a Project Coordinator who will work on an international research study with researchers at MGH Global Health as well as with research team members and collaborators in Uganda. The position will be based in Mbarara, Uganda.

A two-year minimum commitment is expected. There is a possibility of renewal

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following activities:

  • Coordinate implementation and data collection for biannual community health fair

  • Plan and implement population census updates

  • Work with team to understand new survey tools and conduct any new capacity building exercises as needed

  • Participate in weekly field meetings and provide feedback

  • Consult with data manager on manipulation of the software system used for data collection and liaise with US-based programmer

  • Liaise with visiting collaborators and donors

  • Improve existing data report formats and develop new feedback methods

  • Conduct data cleaning and quality checks

  • Assist in creating study instruments and assessments

  • Assist with storage procedures for study related documents

  • Assist with IRB application and renewal materials

  • Assist in abstract, poster, and manuscript preparation as requested; there will be ample opportunities to contribute to scholarly projects as a co-author

  • Other administrative duties as assigned

The position requires a Bachelor's degree, with a strong background and demonstrated ability in quantitative analysis. The candidate must possess superior organizational, administrative, time management, and communication skills, with the ability to overcome challenges in ambiguous situations and interact professionally with persons from different cultural backgrounds at all levels.

Additional qualifications include:

  • Strong academic performance: 3.5 cumulative GPA strongly preferred, with an equal or stronger performance in your major(s)

  • Capacity to manipulate, organize, and analyze large amounts of data

  • Exceptional attention to detail

  • Proficiency with the standard Microsoft Office software (particularly Excel) as well as the ability to quickly learn new computer applications

  • Familiarity with statistical programming software (either Stata or R) and EndNote software is a plus

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, and to collaborate with team members located remotely

  • Intellectual independence and initiative

  • Interest in public health or global health

  • Previous research experience preferred

Exceptional quantitative and analytical skills are essential. Computer skills, as described above, are required. The candidate must have excellent English language (spoken and written) skills.

Duties will be carried out in a typical office environment in Mbarara, Uganda. Fieldwork in a rural study site will be conducted on an as-needed basis.

Meetings / Meeting Preparation * Accompany the President to certain meetings, capture all information and manage all follow-up actions and communications. Record follow-up items and work with President to prioritize and execute. * Ensure the President is prepared for all meetings by providing all necessary materials and highlighting relevant information/intelligence on the meeting discussion. * Meeting preparation and follow up on behalf the President: reviewing upcoming meetings for the week to prepare and ensure the leader has all of the information needed to be as productive as possible and sending out agendas or documents to meeting attendees as necessary.
