East Carolina University (www.ecu.edu) is an R2-Doctoral/Research-Intensive University, a member of the 17-campus University of North Carolina System, and the lead institution in the multi-institutional Coastal Studies Institute (https://www.coastalstudiesinstitute.org). With an enrollment of about 28,000 students, including about 5,000 students pursuing graduate and professional degrees. ECU is committed to addressing challenges faced by the coastal plain communities of North Carolina and around the world.

ECU is located in Greenville, NC (pop. ~92,000), which lies ~80 miles east of Raleigh and a short distance from the Atlantic coast. Greenville offers a college-town atmosphere and is a great place to live, work, play, and visit. It has a cost of living more than 10 percent below the national average and boasts a vibrant Uptown district with restaurants, breweries, and shopping. Greenville hosts a variety of festivals throughout the year and offers numerous recreational opportunities, including access to the Tar River, more than nine miles of greenways, nearly 30 parks and recreational facilities, and a growing arts scene.

The Department of Geological Sciences (geology.ecu.edu), one of 16 departments in the Thomas Harriot College of Arts & Sciences, has 10 faculty members and offers a BS in Geology, an MS in Geology, and a graduate certificate in Hydrogeology & Environmental Geology. The Department has strong collaborations with a wide range of other departments at ECU, including Coastal Studies; Geography, Planning & Environment; Physics; Chemistry; Biology; and Engineering.

The Department has deep involvement with and physically houses the offices of the Water Resources Center (https://water.ecu.edu/), which has a mission to enable ECU faculty and students to perform world-class water-related research, education, and outreach across eastern North Carolina. The Center and its collaborative office, laboratory, and field facilities support the work of over 30 affiliated faculty from natural science, social science, and engineering across the institution with an emphasis on developing programs and infrastructure that support strategic initiatives at ECU.

Departmental faculty have active research programs in a wide variety of geoscience disciplines, but strengths likely to be of the most interest to applicants for this position include coastal geology, groundwater/surface water interactions, organic geochemistry, and hydrogeophysics. Extensive research instrumentation is available to support this work, including two geochemistry laboratories, a sedimentology instrumentation laboratory, a variety of field and laboratory water quality instrumentation, and a range of geophysical equipment suitable for investigations of the shallow subsurface.

The Department of Geological Sciences is committed to enriching the lives of students, faculty, and staff by providing a diverse academic community where the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and perspectives is an active part of living and learning. The Department seeks to create an environment that fosters the recruitment and retention of a diverse student body, faculty, and staff, and works to increase diversity and access to higher education for groups underrepresented in the sciences by building an environment that welcomes, celebrates, and promotes respect for diversity.
