Summary:
The Center for Child and Family Policy recently received funding from the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) for an efficacy trial of a teacher professional development program in elementary schools in North Carolina.

This comprehensive teacher PD program provides English as a second language (ESL) and classroom teachers with a framework for collaboration, skills for implementing high-impact instructional strategies, and approaches for incorporating families' cultural wealth into the classroom. The PD program is based on research supporting teacher PD and includes the DCCS Institute, follow-up application modules, ongoing implementation coaching, and weekly collaboration sessions between the ESL and classroom teachers. The specific aims of this Goal 3 Efficacy Study are to:

Aim 1: Examine the effectiveness of the DCCS PD program for increasing collaboration between the ESL and classroom teachers, increasing the use of high-impact instructional strategies with ELs, incorporating students' cultural wealth into the classroom, and increasing outreach to parents. Aim 2:

Examine the effectiveness of the DCCS PD program on students' language and literacy skills in phonics/word recognition, language and writing, comprehension, and vocabulary. Aim 3: Explore student, teacher, and parent characteristics that mediate or moderate the relationship between the DCCS program and students' language and literacy outcomes. Work Performed A detailed description of functional areas and tasks follows: The position is full time, but a part-time option (30 hours per week) may be available if desired.

This position will act as a key collaborator with the primary investigators to lead the research teams in developing, refining and conducting project activities. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Work with school principals, ESL teachers, and classroom teachers to recruit Latino English Learners (ELs) to participate in the study. Collect and organize parent consent forms and parent surveys.

  • Coordinate and schedule data collection activities including teacher surveys, workshop evaluations, parent surveys, student assessments, teacher observations within several North Carolina school districts.

  • Supervise senior research aides in data collection and data entry activities.

  • Create and maintain database of all study data, including online teacher surveys, student assessments, classroom observations, and parent surveys.

  • Analyze and interpret quantitative andqualitative data in conjunction with principal investigator(s), statisticians, and other members of the research team.

  • Lead efforts in obtaining and maintaining university IRB approval and reporting on grant activities to the Institute of Education Sciences.

  • Manage project administrative responsibilities such as contractor paperwork, project invoices, short-term cash funds, research participant consents and payments, etc.

  • Participate in preparation of manuscripts for publication, written reports to funders, and conference presentations.

  • Attend project-specific meetings - this includes travel to various school sites.

  • Manage the workflow of data collection staff and an undergraduate research assistant.

  • Perform other related duties incidental to work described herein.

In addition, the successful candidate will possess the following qualities/attributes: Excellent organizational skills.

Experience working with teachers and students. Proven excellence in working with a research team and coordinating data collection Experience conducting evaluations of school-based programs. Experience with both qualitative and quantitative research methods. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred but not required.

Occupational Summary Coordinate and participate in a variety of duties involved in the collection, interpretation and documentation of data in support of a large, multi-year evaluation project. Work Performed A detailed description of functional areas and tasks follows: This full-time position (40 hours/week) will work on the evaluation of the Book Babies program in Durham, NC. The Book Babies program was developed by Book Harvest and provides Medicaid and WIC eligible children and their families with age-appropriate books 2-3 times a year from birth until the start of kindergarten. The goal of the program is to provide books and guidance for parents so they can help develop their children's pre-literacy and school- readiness skills in order to promote success in kindergarten and beyond. The Center for Child and Family Policy is conducting a 5-year randomized controlled trial that will assign newborns into one of three groups to evaluate the effectiveness of Book Babies on early literacy outcomes and school readiness. Specific activities for these projects will vary depending on the needs of the projects but will include: * Establish procedures and manage data collection processes at prescribed intervals in coordination with other team members, grant sponsors and research subjects, * Supervise and work in tandem with project team members in data collection activities occurring in homes, within local schools and at other community-based locations, * Train new team members and assign/review the work of key research support positions, * Manage evaluation data including; data entry, coding/scoring and cleaning in preparation for analyses, * Summarize data to create frequency tables, charts and other graphics used to monitor trends and for CQI purposes, * Work in partnership with investigators in the preparation of reports to sponsors, * Represent the evaluation team at meetings with sponsors, assist in the development of presentations and give presentations as requested, and In addition the successful candidate will possess the following qualities/attributes: * Good interpersonal skills * Strong organizational skills and attention to minute details. * Strong computer skills. * Research experience preferred. * Bachelor's degree preferred. * Ability to speak Spanish preferred but not required. * Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
