The Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Cancer Biology (MIC) at the University of Virginia seeks applicants for a Project Associate. The Department of MIC is an energetic, robust, and exciting basic science research department in the School of Medicine (SOM) with a multi-million dollar portfolio of NIH, federal, foundation, and industrial grants and contracts, as well as large intramural department funds and reserves. MIC currently has 35 faculty and over 120 staff, graduate students, undergraduate students and volunteers.
The Project Associate will provide direct management and oversight of many initiatives and special projects related to facilities management, lab renovation projects, space and asset management, and social media/website maintenance. This position will also provide administrative support for the research and education missions for the department directly related to multiple programs including the weekly MIC Seminar Series and the Microbiology Graduate Program. This support will be provided with an advanced level of responsibility serving as a resource, advisor and coordinator for these programs and initiatives.
This is a key position, which requires collaboration and excellent communication with department faculty and staff, the SOM Dean's Office, and other University departments, centers and organizations. The incumbent must be aware of and follow all SOM and University policies and guidelines. MIC provides an outstanding working environment, and fosters an efficient, yet highly collegial and friendly atmosphere to work, learn, and collaborate with various colleagues in the department.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Manage special projects related to office, lab, and conference room renovations,
Manage special projects related to space and asset management including maintaining and updating internal School of Medicine systems and databases,
Maintain the MIC website, Twitter account, and all other technology/social media needs within the department,
Support the MIC Seminar Series (includes working with speakers on travel and lodging arrangements),
Provide administrative support to the Microbiology Graduate Program including room scheduling for thesis committees and defenses,
May be asked to provide support related to equipment and lab supply procurement, accounts payable, and travel and expense card reconciliations where needed (mostly as a redundant backup for finance staff members when on leave), and;
May be asked to provide interim/backup support for department events such as happy hours, speaker lunches/dinners, symposia, holiday parties, etc.
Minimum Requirements:
Education: Bachelor's Degree. Relevant experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
Experience: Two Years.

Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
