Educational Talent Search

The Educational Talent Search (ETS) program provides support and information on all aspects of planning for admission to and graduation from a post-secondary institution. The primary focus of the ETS program is to identify low-income, first-generation students who are at risk of dropping out of high school. Students at Dorsey High School, Crenshaw High School, North Hollywood High School, in grades 9th-12th are eligible for enrollment.

Each year, we serve more than 1500 high school students. The program provides advancement information to assist students in graduating from high school, completing their A-G requirements, and assisting them in planning for college entrance exams as well as college and financial aid applications, as well as career development assistance. The goal of the program is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education, enroll in and graduate from institutions of post-secondary education.

JOB SUMMARY AND PURPOSE

The Project Advisor is responsible for preparing participants for High School Graduation and Post-Secondary Enrollment. This attained with the providing of services and activities that will enhance motivation and improve graduation rates related to college and career advising, academic achievement monitoring, college and career tours, and a summer program.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure that program objectives are met annually

  • Visit various assigned target schools as needed

  • Recruit, select, enroll, and manage caseload of students

  • Assist students who are Seniors with college and FAFSA Application completion

  • Advise students to take courses for A-G Admission requirement and a rigorous program of study

  • Provides participants with academic advising and planning; career awareness and assessment; information about post-secondary options, college entrance examination, and financial aid; and assistance with the application process

  • Develops curriculum and implements workshops/seminars on college and career planning, financial literacy and personal development

  • Plans and coordinates college and career tours

  • Coordinates tutorial services and assists in pairing students with tutors; tracks student progress

  • Maintains files and records on participants document services provided, student progress and outcomes as needed

  • Enter data into Blumen database to keep track of student information and tutoring hours

  • Assist in planning, coordinating, supervising, and attending program activities and field trips

  • Take an active role with the participant's discipline process, including but not limited to: write-ups; Verbal warnings; and communication with parents/guardians

  • Actively supervise program participants during group activities to ensure the safety of all participants

  • Assisting the development and implementation of the Summer Program and the Academic Year Program

  • Collaborate with other agencies and other VOALA programs

  • Develop curriculum and implement workshops/seminars on college and career planning, financial literacy, and personal development

  • Maintain an organized, accurate, and up to date files and records on participants progress and outcomes

  • Coordinate tutorial services by supervising, monitoring, and supporting tutors and teachers during weekly tutoring and Saturday Academy sessions

  • Assist with the collection of data for the Annual Performance Report (APR)

  • Refer participants and parents to specific outside resources as needed

  • Other duties as required and is subject to change at any time

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Reliable mode of transportation to visit target school, training sites, as well as other Volunteers of America sites

  • Must be available to work a flexible work schedule

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's degree required in education, social work, counseling, and/or related degree from accredited college or university

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience working in an educational setting, TRIO Federal program, or similar program with disadvantaged and at-risk students

  • Experience preparing high school students for admission to post-secondary schools

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of college entry and financial aid/scholarship process

  • Proficiency in online tools/resources: CSU Mentor, University of California

TECHNOLOGY SKILLS:

  • Basic computer and Microsoft operating system navigation, including Outlook, Office, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Good interpersonal skills including relationship building

  • Good oral and written communication skills

  • Comfortable with public speaking

  • Ability to work with a large group of students

  • Ability to work independently

  • Able to facilitate group presentations

  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards, with or without reasonable accommodation, including meeting qualitative and quantitative productivity standards

  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards

INTERPERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Have a client centered approach to customer services for the disadvantaged

  • Prompt, collaborative/team player, adaptable, communicator, organized, consistent, and compassionate

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish (written and verbal)

  • Master's degree in education, social work or counseling from accredited college or university preferred

  • Experience advising and assisting students with college admissions and financial aid process

  • Professional or personal experience in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting project participants

  • Formal training and/or work experience in programming that improves secondary school retention/graduation rates
