Project Administrator

The JSCOR Project Administrator will serve as the JSCOR manager and will collaborate with faculty, post-doctoral fellows, residents, students and staff throughout the Department of Surgery on clinical outcomes and health services research. The JSCOR Project Administrator will manage JSCOR operations, data management and research staff at the Johns Hopkins Surgery Center for Outcomes Research (JSCOR) to meet departmental research needs.

The Project Administrator is responsible for managing multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously. The JSCOR Project Administrator will be responsible for monitoring the progress of all research projects to ensure accurate and timely project completion and ensure deadlines are met. The foundation of all JSCOR work will follow best practice data management standards, generate appropriate and accurate statistical analysis to yield high quality research support.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

The JSCOR Project Administrator will be the primary person responsible for reviewing research proposals and working with researchers to implement the proposals.

Primary Duties will include:

Management of JSCOR Operations which include but not limited to

  • Provide first line of research technical support for individuals involved in surgical research

  • Data management and preparation of "sliced / curated" data sets

  • Develop and maintain confidential and complex health care databases in a secured network

  • Manage research regulatory compliance and data use agreements, BAA's etc.

  • Develop and maintain data use agreements

  • Serve as lead in Research IT solutions as well as holding a leadership role in planning development, testing, maintenance, and support of file based database systems, Microsoft Access/SQL Databases and REDcap for multiple research projects

  • Provide guidance in management, preparation and support of JH IRB's applications

  • Assist in abstract, manuscript and poster preparation

  • Perform data mining tasks requested by research faculty using data on the research server, Surgery Core Repository, and Johns Hopkins approved storage platforms.

  • Operational Management of JSCOR Surgical Faculty Mentorship Program

  • Provide and maintain JSCOR website and server access (JHED and Active Directory permissions)

  • Develop and maintain JSCOR standard operating procedures

  • Oversight and management of JSCOR Financial Operations

  • Oversight and management of JSCOR Statistical servers with the JH Enterprise Server Team

  • Supervisor and management of JSCOR team (Research Assistants/Analysts)

Perform other duties as assigned.

Research Data Management Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Collaborating with research faculty and staff to develop research questions, identify and recommend appropriate data sets and provide data analysis to support research work.

  • Designing, developing, updating and maintaining databases, flat/text files, STATA/SAS/SPSS data sets, dictionaries and format libraries.

  • Performing data error and logic checks to verify accuracy and consistency of data.

  • Perform data linkages between national registries, electronic medical record data extracts and claims data.

  • Data cleaning and modification.

  • Data manipulation with complex queries and the creation of tables and listings.

  • Generating ad hoc reports.

  • Creating tables, graphs and slides for preliminary data for grants, presentations, and publications; creating backups of all data/software.

  • Assisting in the design of study questionnaires and electronic case report forms.

  • Determining the most effective method of data collection.

  • Develop and administer surveys.

  • Create REDCap data collection forms.

Research and Statistical Services:

  • Writing or reviewing statistical sections of protocols, grant, project proposals, abstracts, and manuscripts.

  • Generating tables and figures for grants, progress reports, abstracts, and manuscripts

  • Writing detailed specifications for analysis files, consistency checks, tables, and figures.

  • Interpret analyses and write statistical sections (methods and results) of study reports.

  • Communicate with faculty, data managers, study personnel, and other clients regarding statistical design, programming, and analysis.

  • Develop and update appropriate statistical documentation, store documents and data, and perform all functions in accordance with applicable regulations, guidance, and procedures.

  • Provide training, coaching, and mentorship to students, residents, fellows, and faculty who desire to design and implement their own research studies.

  • Oversight of the MPH students in the JSCOR Mentorship program, giving regular seminars on statistical/epidemiological methods, and providing training sessions on statistical programming techniques.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's degree in Public Health, Biostatistics or Epidemiology or related field. Requires a minimum of 5 years of related working experience. Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications/Experience:

  • Two years of directly related work experience is required. Substantial data management and bio statistical experience including the use of techniques such as regression modeling and survival analysis is required.

  • Experience mining and analyzing large administrative, claims and clinical data sets (for ex NSQIP, NTDB, HICUP, HSCRC, MarketScan or other similar data sets and national Clinical Surgical Registries

  • Supervisory experience

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills are necessary to work in this multidisciplinary environment with special sensitivity toward understanding user skill level and experience.

  • Must have experience with data management for clinical research, use of relational databases, and managing data large administrative data sets, claims and electronic medical record data sets.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills are also required and experience preparing abstracts, posters and manuscripts for publication.

  • Advanced technical and programming skills with statistical packages (e.g. STATA preferred but SAS or R may be appropriate); database software (e.g. SQL, Access); query/report building tools (e.g. SQL Reporting Services); business intelligence tools; data visualization software (e.g. Tableau); web design; web surveys (e.g. SNAP, Qualtrics, REDcap) and proficient in using MS Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Willingness to travel and present at national conferences.

Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
