JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Enterprise Applications within Penn State IT is seeking a Programmer/Analyst to join the Learning Management System (LMS) Development team. This position supports the operation of Canvas, Penn State's Learning Management System, and is responsible for the analysis, design, development, implementation and maintenance of systems that support Canvas with a focus on system to system integrations and open source solutions. In addition, the Programmer/Analyst works with the LMS Operations team and end-users to resolve customer and internally reported software defects and issues. The responsibilities of this role will primarily focus on deploying and supporting integrations for Canvas and less of the typical programmer role in web app development.
The location of this position is flexible and can operate fully remote within the United States, fully in-person at our University Park Campus, or in a hybrid model of both in-person and remote. Standard working hours are in the eastern time zone.
Implementing and supporting integrations with Canvas
Evaluating and implementing commercial and/or open-source software solutions
Designing, coding, testing and supporting software
Actively engaging in the implementation of application deployment strategies
Working with other staff to support production services that may include off-hours support
Support the enhancement of product quality by working with colleagues, as well as the Canvas Community, to identify best practices in design and development, as well as creative opportunities, to leverage the LMS to support the institution
Expertise in Unix/Linux
Experience integrating with large packaged solutions
Experience in education technology and prior experience with LTI or other IMS Global standards
Experience with web development and REST API's
Experience with OpenID, OAuth, and JWT
Strong skills in SQL development
A mindset towards building systems for the cloud and DevOps fundamentals
Hands-on experience building, deploying, monitoring and solving containerized microservices using Docker, Kubernetes and Helm
Demonstrated ability to interact professionally with developers, other technical staff, subject matter experts, and users
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with respect to understanding, documenting, and describing complex technical subjects
Typically requires an Associate's Degree or higher plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 2. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs.
This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of re-funding.
