The Career and Transfer Specialist is the primary staff responsible for ensuring the promotion, availability and networking of career and transfer related resources and information for students, faculty and staff. Career and Transfer services are integrated within the Advising Center, providing support to all phases of Highline's advising model (Entry Advising, Pathway Advising and Faculty Advising). The Program Specialist 2 works in close coordination with these advising areas, under the direction and leadership of the Director of Advising, Career & Transfer. The person in this position is expected to participate fully as a member of the work unit, supporting other functional areas to facilitate the coordination and distribution of career and transfer information to students, faculty and staff.

Schedule: Mon

  • Fri, 8am

  • 5pm. This position is a classified full-time position, which is eligible for overtime.

Salary Information: The salary range stated above reflects the starting step of Range 42 (Step A) and ending step (Step M) salary for this classified position and includes a 5% King County compensation provision. Based on salary placement of Step A, it will take 5.5 years to reach Step L on the salary schedule, 11.5 years to reach step M on the salary schedule. This does not reflect any contractual changes; legislative mandated salary increases or Cost of Living Increases (COLA's) that may be approved in the future.

Essential Tasks

Reporting to the Director of Entry Advising, this position will:

Coordination, programming and event planning (50%)

  • Develop and deliver innovative programming and processes for Career Development and transfer services;

  • Works collaboratively to create brochures, orientation materials, forms, and documents for distribution and/or presentation;

  • Coordinates activities/events to introduce students to available career development and student employee resources; plans events and trainings;

  • Collaborate with college partners to develop and present career and transfer sessions;

  • Independently research and stay updated on employment trends;

  • Develop and maintain official communication to constituents on and off campus;

  • Be an active member or representative of appropriate state councils;

  • Provide specialized workshops and trainings related to resume writing, interview skills and dress for success strategies;

  • Help students learn how to conduct online career searches and job searches;

  • Maintain and respond to inquiries and issues through Highline's career support platform, Handshake;

  • Maintain tracking log of delivery of workshops and services and providing a monthly outcome report;

  • Develop and deliver career related event surveys to track outcomes.

Direct Student Support (20%)

  • Respond to inquiries via email, phone, in-person and through career platforms;

  • Introduces students to resources available throughout the college;

  • Works collaboratively with other staff to assist students in academic pathways;

  • Develops, facilitates, and delivers workshop content on various topics such as career planning, self-advocacy, communication skills and professional development opportunities;

  • Provide assistance with students obtaining career research and internships opportunities.

Faculty and staff support (20%)

  • Works collaboratively with program faculty, staff, to research and develop best practice strategies to assist students in being successful in their program;

  • Works collaboratively with other departments to facilitate and address student and program needs;

  • Help develop and maintain career and transfer resources to faculty and staff;

  • Coordinate with faculty and staff on campus to keep transfer information and resources up-to-date;

  • Serve as point of contact within the campus community regarding career and transfer

information.

Administration (10%):

  • Support the Director with administrative tasks as needed;

  • Provide routine administrative tasks, such as but not limited to answering Career and Transfer Services main phone line, monitoring career and transfer email inbox, respond to emails, voicemails and as functions as the front line contact;

  • Administer career preparedness tools;

  • Direct and supervise student workers as needed;

  • Support the functions of the Advising Center on an as needed basis;

  • Other related duties as assigned

SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Effectively communicate orally and in written form;

  • Experience with Microsoft Office and data and information systems;

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students from diverse backgrounds;

  • Conduct public speaking with students, community members, industry professionals, faculty and colleagues;

  • Experience in effective advising and counseling techniques;

  • Prioritize projects and work in an environment with frequent interruptions;

  • Maintain a professional demeanor during emotionally charged situations;

  • Explain policies, procedures, rules, and regulations;

  • Meet required timelines and organize detailed information about the program including student progress;

  • Work independently with minimal supervision.

Qualifications

  • Associates of Arts Degree; AND
  • Two years of full-time experience in program coordination, administration and delivery, working in an educational or related setting.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience in Education, Student Development, or Social Work/Psychology or related disciplines;

  • Experience working in higher education at a community college;

  • Knowledge of career exploration, development and search best practices;

  • Knowledge of transfer process;

  • Experience developing and assessing programs and services;

  • Experience with PeopleSoft, ctc

Link and/or student success and engagement platforms;

  • Fluency in a language other than English.
