UI Health is seeking a Program Services Specialist to join our Psychiatry Center team. This role will perform essential non-clinical referral functions in addition to scheduling using hospital system, verification of mental health benefits for new patients admitted into outpatient psychiatry clinic. This position must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Recognizes psychiatric characteristics of a variety of age/background of psychiatric patients treated in order to assess the acuity and needs of potential patients and make scheduling recommendations based on patient telephone encounter.

  • Schedules incoming patients/callers into the most appropriate psychiatric specialty clinics.

  • Maintains working knowledge of various services and service providers in the Department of Psychiatry, and outside referrals, in order to accurately schedule new patients.

  • Identify psychiatric crisis calls and connect with licensed clinician/refer out to outside resources Manages various forms of communication (phone, email, fax, patient notes), with working knowledge of EPIC and documenting the patient encounter in the hospital Electronic Medical Record.

  • Respond to complex inquiries related to scope of services available, policies, and procedures for new patients seeking initial appointment. Informs clinic manager of problems related to physician appointment coverage, over booking, patient complaints, etc.

  • Documents the disposition of internal hospital referrals, in Epic, in order to communicate effectively across referring disciplines and internal clinics.

  • Maintains working knowledge of various health insurance plans and provide insurance verification and clearance for initial appointments scheduled in department to help ensure accuracy in billing.

  • Obtains medical information from other agencies/physicians prior to clinical visit.

  • Schedules and reschedules appointments, informing patients of anticipated delays, changes in physician, expected length of visit, etc. Helps maintain internal referral lists and schedule patients into clinic openings when availability permits.

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications Required:

  • Any one or combination totaling three (3) years (36 months) from the categories below:

A. Coursework in social work or behavioral sciences, or closely related field as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:

  • 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
  • Associate's Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
  • 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
  • Bachelor's Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)

B. Progressively more responsible work experience in social service/ counseling at a paraprofessional level under qualified supervision.

2.Demonstrated experience providing intake coordination services to appropriately assess the needs of psychiatric patients and/or patients in crisis and then schedule with the appropriate medical practice area for treatment.
