Description

SUMMARY: The Program Physician is responsible for approving admissions to the opioid treatment program (OTP), direct patient care, providing clinical supervision to medical staff, and sharing administrative supervision function with Program Director. Supervise program Nurse Practitioner, collaborating with medical and management team to improve program procedures and outcomes.

This position will cover 4 days per week across opioid treatment programs, outpatient and residential.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:

  • Approve all admissions and manage methadone treatment for opioid-dependent patients.

  • Participate directly or indirectly in the medical assessment of new and existing patients.

  • Admit and manage patients on other forms of MAT as agreed upon by Program Physician and CODA.

  • Coordinate care with OTP patients' primary care and other care providers, ensuring treatment continuity and safe prescribing practice, in person and via phone consult.

  • Work closely with an OTP nursing staff to ensure safe dispensing of methadone, adherence to physician order sets, and accuracy of patient assessment.

  • Provide clinical supervision to the Nurse Practitioner responsible for evaluating new and existing patients.

  • Collaborate with Medical and Program Directors on conducting performance evaluations of nursing staff and nurse practitioner(s).

  • Provide direct patient care (patient visits) for medically complex patients as needed.

  • Attend weekly multidisciplinary treatment team meetings to ensure appropriate treatment of patients, including weekly methadone operations team meetings, weekly or biweekly supervision with CODA's Medical Director, and biweekly medical leadership meetings.

  • Provide on call medical coverage for patients, including fielding questions about medication administration or interactions, authorizing order changes or approving administration of medications prescribed by external providers. Supervise and teach residents and fellows on rotation in the OTP.

  • Collaborate with Medical and Program Directors on development of program policies and procedures.

  • Work closely with the Medical and Program Directors to ensure safe clinical procedures and policies.

  • Ensure completion of electronic medical records.

  • Recognize and initiate appropriate response to crisis or emergency situations.

  • Travel between sites to deliver services, pick up supplies, or deliver medications as needed.

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:

  • Provide coverage for other positions on a short-term basis as needed.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position has input into issues regarding the full range of supervisory responsibilities, including hiring, coaching, corrective action, oversight, training and termination of at least one Nurse Practitioner.

Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience providing care to high risk, high need patients, including those diagnosed with co-occurring disorders.

  • Exposure to use of medication assisted treatment for patients with addictive disorders.

  • Board Certified Family Physician or General Internist OR anesthesia and psychiatry board certification with similar background or experience.

  • Experience working within a medical home model.

  • Ability to utilize both oral and written communications skills to effectively communicate with patients, co-workers, community resources, supervisors, and various other individuals encountered in the course of performing work, while maintaining patient confidentiality and establishing professional rapport.

  • Ability to operate a computer, utilize basic MS Office programs, and effectively navigate and maintain patient records in an electronic medical records system.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

  • Current MD or DO license.

  • Unrestricted DEA certificate to prescribe controlled substances.

  • DATA Waived Physician (DWP under the Drug Addiction Treatment Act) within one month of hire.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or ability to acquire within 90 days of hire.

  • A valid Oregon or Washington driver's license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 25 lbs.

  • Must be able to perform Basic Life Support for 15 minutes continuously and maintain BLS certification.

  • Must be able to utilize personal protective equipment and follow safety procedures while interacting directly with patients and working in a laboratory environment, including handling of laboratory specimens and laboratory equipment.

  • Must be able to operate a personal computer, including reading from a computer monitor, keyboarding, and using a mouse.

  • Must be able to reach, bend, and handle objects.

  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.

  • Ability to use a telephone.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Reliable transportation between multiple worksites.

  • Consistent attendance and punctuality are required of this position.

  • A negative result on all pre-employment, reasonable basis, and post-accident drug screens.

  • An acceptable criminal record as determined by DHS, the Oregon Administrative Rules, and the Oregon Revised Statutes; and no current supervised parole or probation.

  • An acceptable driving record and automobile insurance coverage as recommended by CODA's automobile insurance provider.
