Who We Are:

The SwRI Department of Earth, Oceans, and Space (located on the University of New Hampshire campus in the seacoast town of Durham, NH) offers exciting aerospace engineering opportunities. We offer a unique collaborative environment involving scientists and engineers at both SwRI and UNH. We design and fabricate spaceflight hardware, including new instrumentation and custom-designed avionics. Active programs include science missions in space weather, heliophysics, astrophysics, and Earth science, as well as commercial spaceflight programs.

Objectives of this Role:

  • Provide project management and technical leadership for a variety of SwRI projects, mostly in the aerospace sector (NASA, NOAA, DoD, and commercial space opportunities).

  • Effectively coordinate teams of scientists and engineers from multiple institutions (including SwRI, University of New Hampshire, NASA research centers, and other outside partners) to achieve program technical objectives.

  • Maintain strong analytical and innovative skills that are needed to effectively lead complex multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional teams that typically include scientists, electrical engineers, software engineers, mechanical engineers, and systems engineers.

  • Author technical and budgetary reports as needed to satisfy contractual obligations, and to maintain communications amongst team members.

  • Provide input to deliverables and cost management for the department for the full program life cycle with an understanding of time, parts, and finance.

Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the development, fabrication, integration, and test of various flight hardware projects, providing technical leadership to maintain control of the scope, schedule, and budget of each project.

  • Conduct regular meetings as needed to maintain oversight, provide guidance, and insure communications amongst team members. Some of these meetings will require travel.

  • Author technical and budgetary reports as needed to satisfy contractual obligations, and to maintain communications amongst team members.

  • Provide technical briefings to clients and SwRI leadership.

  • Work with the SwRI Institute Quality Systems department to ensure compliance with all contractual and SwRI-imposed quality requirements, which are designed to satisfy the requirements of various quality programs, including ISO 9001.

  • Provide technical leadership and support of business development efforts, including technical interfacing with customers to define requirements, responding to Requests for Information (RFI), and the development of technical and cost proposals.

Requirements:

  • Requires a Bachelors in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or closely related degree field.

  • 10 years: Experience with program management and leadership of technical projects in aerospace or related industries, including the management of diverse engineering teams, interfacing with clients, and the successful management of projects within cost and schedule.

  • 10 years: Strong organizational, management, communications, technical, and interpersonal skills are essential. Should have a working knowledge of Risk Management, Configuration Management, Earned Value Management, Resource Management, and the management of government contracts.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, Teams, PowerPoint, and Project. Must have the ability to learn SwRI internal software, procedures, and business rules.

  • Experience managing projects using ISO 9001 quality systems is desirable.

  • A valid/clear driver's license is required.

Special Requirements:

Work assignment is in Durham, New Hampshire. Must be a U.S. person (i.e., U.S. citizen, non-U.S. citizen national, lawful permanent resident, asylee, or refugee) due to ITAR work in section.
