In Global Information Experience, we write the documentation for VMware's products and services, for end-users, administrators, and developers, using a variety of tools and process that work with the needs of our varied business units. The team also includes the Localization department, which ensures that our product documentation and software is translated efficiently and with high quality.

Responsibilities:

Tools Program Manager for Information Experience (IX)

  • Ensure IX tool requirements are defined and prioritized. Work with IX representatives, the Content Strategy and Operations (CS&O) team (which provides our tools), IX management, content architects, and IX writers to agree upon and optimize process.

  • Champion IX priorities for feature development and bug fixes in concert with other IX and CS&O representatives.Track feature development for the toolchain and prioritize bugs. Communicate news, schedules, and issues, and negotiate across IX managers and IX leads to set priorities.

  • Keep Content Standards information up-to-date regarding processes pertaining to tools.

  • Monitor bugs across the toolchain to increase efficiencies for the whole organization. Assist writers in differentiating between known and new issues and track critical issues, and communicate workarounds to known issues.

General IX Responsibilities

  • Contribute to and participate in IX and Globalization, Tools, and Information Experience (GTIX, which is the parent team) strategic initiatives, including Campaigns and Missions.

  • Manage and follow-up on communications and joint commitments: Work with management and acquisition teams regarding integration, tools, and process issues, for example, joint tooling commitments with CS&O and IX, and updating IX playbooks.

  • Handle designated communication between IX teams and stakeholders when regular updates and proactive engagement on topics that are shared across BUs are required, for example, for updates to processes or toolchain issues.

  • Represent IX writers' needs and issues with developer documentation projects.

  • Manage and handle stakeholders' requirements (for example, localization, etc.) with CS&O.

  • Contribute to general communications for the team, for example, setting up offsite meetings and all-hands.

Required Skills:

For this unique role in our team, we seek an individual with experience in writing tools as well as project management skills. DITA toolchain skills are a plus.

  • Strong project management skills including time management, planning, prioritization, and negotiation.

  • Strong oral and written communication and analytical skills.

  • Experience with XML, XML-related standards, DITA, Markdown, other industry standard authoring tools, and version control and content management systems such as Perforce, Git, and SDL's LiveContent Architect or Tridion Docs.

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, CS, Technical Communication, Information Design, User Experience, or a similar field.

  • Minimum 6 years of experience in the technical writing or project management field.
