This position has overall responsibility for the safety and stability of the Company's shelf stable Hot Fill Hold (HFH) beverages. The incumbent is responsible for reviewing and approving the safety and efficacy of all thermal processes developed by Thermal Process Specialists in the group or by external resources or Process Authorities conducting similar work for Campbell's products. The incumbent also provides guidance and oversite to the Thermal Processs Specialists on the design thermal processes and evaluation of process deviations. This includes coordinating the qualification of processing and packaging systems equipment and complying with local regulations where Campbell Soup Company conducts business. This position also requires to serve as Senior Process Specialist for Aseptic and Refrigerated Extended Shelf Life (ESL) beverage technology platform and work under the guidance of Corporate Aseptic Process Authority.
This position will work closely with Global R&D, Global Engineering, Global Supply Chain, Microbiology, and Campbell Soup Company manufacturing and co-manufacturing locations to develop, coordinate and execute ongoing verification programs for hold fill, refrigerated ESL and aseptically processed products. This position will also work closely with R&D Innovation teams to identify, advance, and assure the safety of new processing technologies associated with hot fill/ ESL/aseptic filling. This position will also work with Quality Assurance to develop audit programs to assure compliance and continuous improvement.
This position will provide technical expertise to develop standards, manuals and training programs, and to assure the organization stays abreast of new regulatory requirements and industry best practices. This person is Campbell Soup's representative to the FDA and USDA, is recognized by these agencies as an expert in the field, and legally responsible for the compliance of all processes to the regulatory requirements.
Bachelor of Science in Food Science, Engineering or Microbiology, MS or PhD preferred.
Minimum of 8 years experience in the Food Industry, with 5 years in Thermal Processing of Campbell products or equivalent.
Extensive knowledge of food science, microbiology, engineering principles, calculus, computers, thermal process equipment and instrumentation.
The individual has expert knowledge of microbial risks, product and packaging characteristics/interactions with product, critical factors in thermal processing, commercial equipment, and manufacturing procedures, and their effects on the delivery of a thermal process and maintenance of product safety and stability sterility.
The individual is an expert in designing and conducting the appropriate studies relating to thermal processing of food, such as: temperature distribution studies, controls validation, microbiological challenge tests, process validation and verification studies, and applying other scientific methods related to aseptic and other thermal processing technologies.
The individual is known to government regulators by reputation and recognized by them as Thermal Process Specialist.
Must have excellent judgement, troubleshooting, problem solving and ability to make decisions independently, as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Must demonstrate excellent business and technical writing skills.
Must have the ability to think through complex issues and provide pragmatic solutions based on scientific facts and food safety risk evaluation.
The position requires the fortitude to stand alone and defend his or her decisions in addition to having the savvy to deal with senior management in all areas of the Company.
