Main Purpose of the Position:
As the PMO Leader, you will head several business critical areas that are core to the effective performance of the Design and Construction (D&C) department, including:
Process improvement, tools and procedures
The purpose of the D&C team is to "Build to Power Science." The team is responsible for small projects ($50K - $10M) at the South San Francisco site and satellites (SSF, Dixon, and any business based in SSF). It is also responsible for large projects (>$10M) that are non-manufacturing or GMP related. The portfolio consists of 160-200 active projects with a forecasted overall spend of over $1B during the next 5 years.
This position reports directly to the Sr. Director of D&C. The PMO Lead will be accountable for partnering with the Sr. Director of D&C and the D&C Leadership team to develop, align and implement on D&C's multi-year strategies. This will include establishing annual goals for the department and associated governance.
Processes, tools, and procedures are a key enabler for project delivery. The PMO Lead will partner with D&C and Genentech/Roche functions to lead continuous process improvement. This will include the long-range goals and strategy for the appropriate use of the Engineering Manual.
The role will be a member of Site Services Business Manager Forum and will work closely with the Site Services Sr. Director of Strategy and Business Operations (SBO). It will partner with SBO Communications to help facilitate key site communications triggered by D&C projects.
This position will lead or support key department administration, operational and financial activities for an overall organization of ~55-65 staff. The PMO Leader will advise the Sr. Director of D&C and act as "Chief of Staff" for the leadership team.
Contribute to building and maintaining a strong D&C Team through collaboration, cooperation and effective communications
Develop and maintain strong working relationships with Group Leaders, Project Managers, DECS (Design, Engineering, Construction Services), and Controls
Provide leadership by example and a demonstrated understanding and knowledge of project management methodology, tools and practices
Responsible for developing and maintaining D&C project delivery processes, tools, and procedures, combined with a drive for simplicity and transparency
Establish the long-range goals and strategy for the appropriate use of the Engineering Manual within D&C (Small and Large Projects)
Partner with Governance to establish a strategy to ensure compliance with required processes/procedures across the portfolio of all projects
Create a multi-year strategy for continuous process improvement with D&C processes, tools, and procedures
Drive for measurable improvements and simplification of processes/procedures including the application of LEAN/DMAIC/Six Sigma continuous improvement methodologies
Provide leadership for the creation and maintenance of required training associated with project processes/procedures
Build and develop a network within Genentech and Roche to enhance knowledge of processes/procedures being utilized at other sites/functions
Benchmark with industry experts on enterprise practices within other D&C organizations to identify opportunities for continuous improvement and innovation
Partner with SBO Communications to develop key communications associated with D&C projects and programs
Facilitate multiple meetings including: D&C Leadership Team, CGC, Large Project Forum, Site Ops Quarterly Update, AP Governance and AP Monthly
Lead planning for DC Leadership Team off sites, Check-Ins and Talent Review
Represent D&C in the Site Services Business Manager Forum
Support the tracking and expediting of credit applications
BA/BS required in relevant technical field (Architecture, Construction Management, Engineering Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical)
MBA or alternative advanced degree a plus
Supervisory experience desired
Advanced knowledge of project management methodology, tools and practices
Extensive project management experience especially in the field of process improvement
10+ years of design and construction industry experience (e.g., Project Manager, Program Manager or Project Portfolio Manager), including 5+ years of experience with the basic processes and principals of project management
Demonstrated success with and widely recognized for effective cross-functional collaboration, team-building, and management team partnerships
Ability to engage and deliver through indirect staff
Demonstrated competencies in team Leadership, team facilitation and team member participation
Solid experience in building, mending or strengthening peer relationships and a mature ability to manage conflicting interests within a complex environment
Strong communication (written/verbal) skills, excellent stakeholder management skills, proven track record of consensus building and conflict management in challenging situations
Formal training in LEAN/DMAIC/Six Sigma continuous improvement methodologies desired (Green Belt, Black Belt)
Experience in the direct application of LEAN/DMAIC/Six Sigma continuous improvement methodologies desired
Excellent organization and planning skills
Highly proficient with google suite (gSlides, gSheets, etc.)
