WORK SCHEDULE

  • Day Shift, Full-time, 100% FTE (40 hours per week)

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Responsible to the COHE Program Manager, the Workers' Compensation Health Service Coordinator (HSC) works within/among Harborview (HMC) and UW Medical Center (UWMC) outpatient and inpatient clinical practice areas to facilitate usage of occupational health best practices (OHBP) among health care providers in occupational and environmental medicine, primary care surgical care, and specialty care. Goals include preventing administrative delays that contribute to patient disability through care coordination/claim tracking/barriers assessment for workers who have had an injury on-the-job or an occupational disease as well as interaction between various workers' compensation stakeholders. The HSC exercise independent and joint judgment in interpreting and applying rules and regulations and requires extensive involvement with health care providers, patients, other HSCs, clinical staff, and/or the public regarding specific workers' compensation claims, OHBP, policies, and procedures. The HSC maintains and review case management data, document claim related notes, memos and correspondences, and participate in planning/implementation/monitoring of continuous improvement projects.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • In-person and telephonic support to outpatient HSCs with workers' compensation questions.

  • Promote OHBP by mentoring and/or training/co-training HSC team members and other Harborview staff.

  • Confer regularly with L&I representatives, employers, and agencies regarding the interpretation and implementation of program and institutional policies.

  • Screen workers' compensation claims and identify claims that will benefit from health services coordination; uses internal EHR systems and L&I databases.

  • Track claims receiving HSC work and identify claims that need further HSC services. Track claims to ensure early return-to-work services, care coordination, and improved clinical outcomes of injured workers, as appropriate.

  • Act as a liaison, on behalf of health care providers participating in the COHE program between the injured worker, employer, L&I claim manager, vocational counselor, etc; follow-up or assistance on specific claims. Ensure paperwork/documents are forwarded and received by the appropriate party.

  • Write accurate case notes which documents services provided. HSC case notes must include the content required by the L&I HSC case note format and must be completed, submitted, and billed within 72 hours of encounter.

  • Provide oversight and problem-solving for catastrophic, complex and standard claim management issues.

  • Review and respond to correspondence and request received from the COHE general emails, COHE hotline, Epic inbaskets and other communication tools, and L&I databases.

  • Perform back-up HSC work for COHE clinics as directed by COHE Program Manager.

  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement (PI/QI), providing quality assurance guidance related to OHBP and workers' compensation for participating COHE clinics, including health care providers, HSCs and staff.

  • Promote and contribute to the development of HSC practices and effective working relationships within the COHE team and with other departments/disciplines.

  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED POSITIN QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school graduation or equivalent AND two years of experience in the program specialty

OR

  • An equivalent combination of education/experience

DESIRED POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

  • A bachelor's degree

AND/OR

  • Three years of experience in direct patient care, return to work coordination, occupational health care role, or equivalent experience.

  • Applicant will become enrolled with Washington State Department of Labor & Industries as non-provider biller. Must be able to obtain an NPI and L&I number.
