This is an excellent opportunity to work for the Community & Library Services Department. We have an outstanding career opportunity available, as we're looking for the "right person" to serve as PT Program Coordinator (Pool Manager) - Aquaticswithin the Community & Library Services Department. This position will work out of City Gym & Pool.The ideal candidate possesses at least three (3) years of directly related aquatics experience, possess a current American Red Cross First Aid and CPR Certificate for the Professional Rescuer or American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers, American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, and Water Safety Instructor Certification., possesses effective and cooperative communication and interpersonal skills, is relentlessly team-focused, and thrives in a busy environment where attention to detail is important. The incumbent will assist the Recreation Coordinator in managing day to day operations that include: serving as a visible presence on the pool deck, ensuring all policies, rules and regulations are followed, staffing, lifeguarding and lesson instruction, facility maintenance, customer service, assist with planning and leading in service trainings and certification course, and instructing swim lessons and lifeguarding as needed.

The incumbent that fills the current vacancy at City Gym and Pool will work 19 hours a week, and be available to work scheduled shifts that may include nights and weekends.

Temporary/part-time employment is restricted to 1,000 hours within a 12-month period (July 1 - June 30) and does not qualify to receive City benefits, except those required by law. The City does not belong to the Social Security system. However, enrollment in an alternative retirement program is mandatory which requires an employee contribution of 7½% of base earnings to the Public Agency Retirement System (PARS). There are no rights to employment and employment may end with or without cause or advance notice. Further restrictions apply to CalPERS Retired Annuitants.

Examples of Essential Duties

  • Working with the Recreation Supervisor and Coordinator, facilitate aquatics programs that meet the community needs and interests, providing educational, cultural, recreational, and/or civic experiences consistent with the City's mission and adopted plans and policies.

  • Assist in managing the day-to-day operations of the aquatics program at the City Gym and Pool and other facilities as applicable.

  • Assist in managing staff supervision including lifeguarding, lesson instructions, and other related duties.

  • Ensures that department policies are followed; enforces the rules and regulations of the pool.

  • Serve as a visible presence on the pool deck.

  • Assist in daily facility maintenance.

  • Respond to customer inquiries, provide information regarding community programs, and register customers for recreational activities, as necessary.

  • Keep inventory of all safety equipment, supplies, and items necessary to provide a safe environment.

  • Instructing swim lessons and lifeguarding as needed.

  • Assist with planning and leading in-service aquatics trainings and training staff in certification courses including but not limited to emergency procedures, water rescues, First Aid, CPR, AED, and Lifeguarding.

  • On occasion, assist with creating flyers and advertisements for the SANDS.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of: Current trends in recreation programs, activities, and experience in aquatics instruction.

Ability to: Supervise program participants in a variety of environments, while creating positive relationships within the community; provide excellent customer service to the community at all times; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; operate personal computer and related software; maintain accurate records; record and retrieve information; lift or move up to 50 pounds without assistance, as well as heavier objects with assistance.

Education and Experience: High school graduation or equivalent certificate required. Three (3) years directly related aquatics experience. Please include any team sports (ex: water polo, swim, etc.) or volunteer experience in your application.

Desirables:

  • Strong understanding of recreation programming in a municipal setting.

  • Proficient writing, proofreading, and editing skills.

  • Ability to effectively listen and provide assistance to internal and external customers in a professional and courteous manner.

  • Comfortable with soliciting sponsorships and donations from local businesses.

  • Ability to quickly and effectively respond to changes in direction.

  • Experience with and working knowledge of any recreation software, Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)

  • College coursework in recreation, communications, or a related field is preferred.

CPR/First Aid/AED Certificates: The certifications below are required at the time of application:

  • Water Safety Instructor Certification

  • American Red Cross First Aid and CPR Certificate for Professional Rescuer OR American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers

  • American Red Cross Lifeguard

American Red Cross Title 22 certification will be required within one year of appointment.
