Job Responsibilities

With our Agency's mission to support the recovery of people with mental illnesses, we provide a complete array of medical and support services for children, adults, and families throughout South Carolina.

This position is located at the Department of Mental Health, Central Office, 2414 Bull Street, Columbia, SC 29201.

As the Communities of Care Coordinator, you will serve as outreach coordinator to engage organizations, community members and coalitions in implementing the Zero Suicide Community Framework, an innovative framework of best and evidence-based practices. Provides outreach and other non-clinical support to First Responders in South Carolina.

Responsibilities for this Program Coordinator I include but are not limited to:

  • Provides project specific trainings, as well as other suicide prevention trainings, and resources across the state (including social media support). Provides community outreach in assigned areas of coverage. Staff will attend community meetings to offer support and information about suicide prevention (i.e.., Zero Suicide task-force meetings).

  • Provides outreach, support and trainings to various agencies/departments, to include but not limited to, Law Enforcement, EMS, Fire, 911 Dispatchers, and Coroners with focus on underserved agencies. Will promote and educate on FRST and other DMH programs under Office of Emergency Services.

  • Participates in Critical Incident Stress Debriefings, Post Critical Incident Seminars, and DMH agency meetings as needed, to provide adequate program support

  • Provides support to the Hope.ConnectsYou.Org Interactive Screener as suicide prevention/support in SC, as requested. This includes responding to incoming mental health questionnaires, dialogues, and updated assessments.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

State Minimum Requirement: A high school diploma and relevant program experience.

Agency Minimum Requirement: Bachelor's Degree and/or experience with suicide prevention or working with the first responder population.

Note: If any Agency Requirements are listed above, applicants must also meet those requirements to be considered for the position.

Preferred Qualifications

Prefer certification in Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) and 5+ years working with First Responders or relevant training experience with this population. Knowledge in suicide prevention and experience with providing trainings, as well as public speaking, social media skills, and data collection.

Additional Comments

The selected candidate must be flexible and able to work beyond required hours of job as indicated by skills, generalization and/or crisis intervention strategies. Will travel in the state to provide support and outreach when needed. Possible overnight stay/travel.
