The Nina Mason Pulliam Legacy Scholars program is a scholarship and mentorship program that provides educational opportunities for non-traditional, first-generation college student populations whose vulnerable background and personal circumstances could impede a successful academic experience without the support of the program. The Program Coordinator is responsible for mentoring undergraduate students in the Nina Scholars program to ensure their personal and academic success as they transition into and persist in college and as they prepare for career or graduate school opportunities after graduation. This position reports to the Program Director of the ASU Nina Scholars program, which is housed within the Watts College of Public Service & Community Solutions.

The Nina Scholars program is based out of the downtown Phoenix and Tempe campuses.

The salary range for this position is dependent on bachelor's degree completion and years of experience.

Working Environment

Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate-controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, standing, walking; visual acuity and manual dexterity associated with daily use of desktop computer; bending, stooping, reaching and lifting up to 20 pounds; ability to clearly communicate to perform essential duties; regular review of completed tasks

Flexible work options

  • Alternative work schedules can include four, 10-hour workdays in a workweek; a nine-day, 80-hour schedule over two workweeks for exempt employees only; and staggered start and stop times.

  • Hybrid work is an arrangement where employees spend a minimum of 60% of their regular workweek at their primary ASU work location. Dean or vice president-level approval is required.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in field appropriate to area of assignment AND two years administrative/coordinator program experience; OR, Six years of progressively responsible administrative/coordinator program experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Bachelor's degree in social work, education, social sciences or related field preferred AND two years administrative/coordinator program experience preferred.

  • Ability to manage confidential and sensitive information.

  • Ability to manage urgent or crisis situations with care, compassion, and diligence.

  • Ability to pay close attention to detail in programming and logistics and when communicating with others.

  • Experience maintaining effective professional and trusting relationships with students, colleagues and supervisors.

  • Experience with using effective verbal and written communication skills in multiple platforms.

  • Experience working with, addressing needs of, and building rapport with undergraduate students and/or at-risk groups in confidential settings which results in demonstrated outcomes tied to persistence and/or personal growth.

  • Knowledge of problem-solving sensitive matters efficiently.

  • Knowledge of theories in higher education, social work, social sciences, and/or counseling that support the needs of the college students served.

  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care.

  • Knowledge of university policies, procedures, and student code of conduct.

  • Knowledge of local/state human services and public services resources and policies.

  • Skill in conducting motivational interviews.

  • Experience in presenting to small or large groups.

  • Skill in program planning and assessment.

  • Experience in using technology including Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, Canvas, online research resources, data collection, management, research, and social media technology and design.

Essential Duties

  • Establishes trusting relationships with scholars; serves as point of contact to help scholars problem solve academic/personal issues, including crises, while demonstrating empathy and resourcefulness by connecting them to university and/or community resources through effective & efficient communication in person, by phone, or digitally; schedules regular mentor meetings with scholars during semester and follow-up with non-responsive scholars

  • Guides scholars to focus on goal setting, overcoming obstacles and achieving personal and academic success; monitors scholars' individual academic performance and program participation through tracking/ reporting/ surveying/ assessments/ evaluations; implements improvement plans with scholars, if necessary

  • Coordinates and prepares program events and activities that encourage scholar participation in academic, graduate, and career development, personal growth and development, life skills, community service, leadership opportunities and celebrations

  • Leads administrative tasks inclusive of monitoring program expenditures and producing program communications and scheduling

  • Contributes to ethical business administration of sustainable program purchases and expenses as budgeted

  • Supports facilitation of program assessments and shares scholar updates to program advisory council members during quarterly (4x/year) meetings

  • Supports program recruitment, including participating in application reviews and candidate interviews

  • Collaborates with other Nina staff members and other university student services staff and faculty to support program goals and address scholar challenges

  • Leads peer mentor initiative between incoming and returning Nina Scholars

  • Attends and participates in Nina Scholars student success fall and spring courses as requested by course instructor

  • Collects and organizes student data reports regarding scholar academic progress

  • Provides constant and competent documentation on scholar interactions

  • Contributes to program, college, and university committee meetings, including supporting student and academic affairs team within the Watts College on student success initiatives as needed

  • Learns foundational higher education and social work theories and practices, including college student persistence and success practices

Salary Range

$45,000 - $50,400 per year; DOE
