About Us

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) is an independent nonprofit organization authorized by Congress in 2010. Its mission is to fund research that will provide patients, their caregivers and clinicians with the evidence-based information needed to make better-informed healthcare decisions. PCORI is committed to continually seeking input from a broad range of stakeholders to guide its work.

The Research Infrastructure and Innovation division leads PCORI's efforts to integrate data, technology, methods, and training to support innovation in the infrastructure domains that advance the conduct and value of patient-centered clinical comparative effectiveness research (CER) - and to accelerate progress toward an integrated learning health system.

Housed within the Research Infrastructure and Innovation division are three units: Patient-centered Methods, Research, Data, and Technology, and Workforce Development.

  • CER Methods focuses on improving methods for the design and conduct of clinical studies with the goal of improving the strength and quality of evidence generated by patient-centered CER. PCORI's Methodology Committee has developed methodology standards for all research funded by PCORI. These standards represent basic practices in planning, designing, and conducting studies to ensure rigorous methodological approaches for the conduct of patient-centered CER, including ensuring patient-centeredness and engagement throughout the research process.

  • Research, Data, and Technology supports strategies to optimize use, accessibility, quality, and interoperability of clinical data for patient-centered CER and other health research. PCORnet was funded by PCORI to serve as a national resource where high-quality health data, patient partnership, and research expertise deliver fast, trustworthy answers that advance health outcomes.

  • Workforce Development develops, executes, and leads strategies to advance an expanded, skilled, strong, diverse, and sustainable patient-centered CER workforce that includes researchers and research staff, clinicians, communities, patient and caregiver partners, and others from diverse backgrounds that both lead and partner in research. Workforce Development oversees a portfolio of funded projects and strategic partnerships to support the development of training and capacity building programs, curricula, materials, and other resources to build the skill and capacity of all members of the patient-centered CER workforce.
