About the School of Building Construction at the Georgia Institute of Technology

The School of Building Construction is a unit of the College of Design, a unique design college that combines technology and research in the many areas of design, buildings, and innovation. We use design thinking to develop new technologies, anticipate the future of buildings and environments, and change the way people experience buildings, art, everyday objects, and their immediate surroundings. Our design, design-build, and construction application research portfolio addresses today's most pressing human and built environment issues, including accessibility, sustainability, and smart cities, as well as ground-breaking efforts in spatial analysis and music technology. This creative, innovative, and interdisciplinary environment sets Georgia Tech's School of Building Construction apart from any other.

The SoBC at Georgia Tech is situated for a major growth in size and impact during the next several years. We are located at the heart of Atlanta, a hub of many development, construction, and design companies. We recently reactivated our Bachelor of Science (B.S.) program in 2020 and we continue to offer our signature graduate programs: Master of Real Estate Development (MRED), Master of Science in Building Construction and Facility Management (MSBCFM), a completely online Professional Masters in Occupational Safety and Health (PMOSH), and Ph.D. in Building Construction.

Job Summary

The School of Building Construction (SoBC) (https://bc.gatech.edu/) at the Georgia Institute of Technology invites applications for a position as Professor of the Practice in the Master of Real Estate Development (MRED) program. This program is a collaborative effort across the Schools of Architecture, Building Construction, and City and Regional Planning in the College of Design. The intention is to engage a distinguished practitioner with a record of national leadership and excellence in real estate development or closely related real estate activity. The position will be required to teach real estate market analysis and/or real estate policy, as well as advance strategic initiatives of the MRED program. Prior post-secondary classroom experience is desirable. We seek candidates with a demonstrated record of past involvement and thought leadership in advancing the understanding of real estate markets.

This position is a .75 FTE Professor of the Practice. Final job offer and length of appointment will be dependent on candidate qualifications.

Responsibilities

This is a Professor of the Practice position beginning in Fall 2024. The responsibilities for this position are listed below:

  • Teach graduate level courses for Master of Real Estate Development (MRED) program with the immediate goal of creating and teaching a real estate development market analysis course and a real estate development policy and ethics course.

  • Teach undergraduate level courses for the new undergraduate minor in Sustainable Development and Construction.

  • Prepare a strategic plan to pursue externally funded market research activities.

  • Manage an annual conference to attract industry, faculty, and students associated with real estate development.

  • Collaborate with the School, College, and Institute leadership in developing a proposed center to further the College of Design efforts in planning, designing, developing and constructing the built environment.

  • Coordinate with the Director of the MRED program to further the strategic vision of the educational program.

  • Demonstrate an exceptional commitment to the teaching and mentoring of students both at undergraduate and graduate levels.

  • Additional responsibilities include curriculum development, scholarship, advising students, and service within the College of Design and across the University.

Most courses at the graduate level are offered in an evening format to a student body that averages 3-5 years of experience in real estate development and/or associated professions.

Required Qualifications

  • A master's level or appropriate terminal professional degree related to real estate or public policy.

  • Fifteen years (15) of professional experience in real estate

  • A proven track record of research associated with real estate development markets including supply and demand, and familiarity with real estate and economic data sources.

  • Evidence of nationally recognized expertise in real estate markets.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior involvement with collegiate level teaching.

  • Experience creating and distributing materials, such as a real estate index, to highlight program research and extend the program brand.

  • Ability to engage in high-impact teaching practices that support deep learning; interest and ability in adopting experiential learning activities and pedagogy that support student success.

  • Ample and demonstrative experience in organizing, producing, and managing events for industry or academia such as conferences or seminars that attract sponsorships and top professionals as presenters and attendees.

  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
