The Forensic and National Security Sciences Institute at Syracuse University invites applications for a Professor of Practice position beginning in January or August of 2025. This is a 10-month, full-time, non-tenure track position with full benefits. Professor of Practice appointments have renewable terms of up to three years, with reappointment possible upon satisfactory performance with no limit on the number of terms.

We are seeking candidates who have a commitment to excellence in teaching, have an interest in advancing forensic science research in the fields of forensic Chemistry or Toxicology, and who are dedicated to serving as mentors and advocates for both undergraduate and graduate students in the field of forensic science.

The Forensic and National Security Sciences Institute at Syracuse University (https://thecollege.syr.edu/forensic-and-national-security-sciences-institute-fnssi/) has 9 full-time faculty and 15 adjunct faculty. The program includes undergraduate BS, BA, and minor degree programs and graduate MS degree programs in Forensic Science (including the FEPAC accredited Advanced Laboratory Track), Biomedical Forensic Science, Digital Forensics, and Medicolegal Death Investigation, as well as Certificates of Advanced Study in both Medicolegal Death Investigation and Firearms and Toolmark Examination.

The successful candidate will have access to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment as well as cross-disciplinary collaborations with multiple departments and colleges within the university including the Biology Department, Chemistry Department, the Bioinspired Institute, the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, the School of Information Studies, and the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Additionally, the forensic program works closely with the Intelligence Community Center for Academic Excellence (https://experience.syracuse.edu/career/intelligence-community-center-academic-excellence/), whose goal is to increase diversity in the workforce of 17 agencies of the U.S. Intelligence Community.

Qualifications

We are seeking a candidate who has a commitment to excellence in teaching and to the development of an active research program that complements the strengths of our faculty. Candidates must have a minimum of a master's degree in forensic chemistry, analytical chemistry, or related area of analytical chemistry. Ph.D. in a related field is preferred but not required. Preference will be given to candidates with professional experience in the field of forensic chemistry, toxicology, instrumental analysis, or related field. Teaching and/or advising experience is beneficial but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching a 2-2 load to include graduate and undergraduate forensic science courses (teaching loads may be reduced at times when partial salary can be secured from external funding).

  • Conduct productive and programmatic research, compete for extramural research funding, mentor undergraduate and graduate student research projects.

  • Train students to operate different instruments (GC and LC-MS)

  • Developing and/or updating course syllabi and new courses, as appropriate.

  • Advising graduate and undergraduate students.

  • Supporting recruitment of MS students, including assessing student applications.

  • Working with the academic unit in support of curriculum review and student learning outcomes.

  • Providing service to the program, college, university, and profession.
