Position Summary

The Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine seeks an established, board-certified internal medicine physician to lead the Department of Internal Medicine as Chair.

The Chair is responsible for developing and overseeing innovative health care delivery models; sustaining excellence in clinical care; promoting and supporting educational endeavors; organizing research initiatives and promoting scholarly activity within the department through grants; publications and presentations.

Based in Huntington, West Virginia, the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine partners with its clinical enterprise, Marshall Health, and its primary hospital partners at Marshall Health Network (MHN) to fulfill the health care needs of West Virginia and surrounding communities. This position offers candidates an opportunity to lead the medical school's largest clinical department while shaping the future of medical education and patient care and driving innovation, excellence and collaboration within our dynamic academic community.

Core Responsibilities:

Leadership:

  • The Chair provides both the vision and leadership for the department, working to develop a culture of service, excellence and pride in the department.

  • The Chair leads the development of program design, implementation and evaluation to ensure the department provides leading edge service and quality.

  • The Chair builds and leads cohesive teams and fosters an environment that facilitates program growth and success.

  • The Chair actively participates in the senior leadership of the institution, serving on the appropriate committees.

Faculty and Staff:

  • The Chair is the administrator of all faculty and staff employed in the department.

  • The Chair will strategically direct the department physicians, resident physicians, fellows, advanced care professionals and other employees to optimize the care of patients, support scholarly activities and provide effective educational programs.

  • The Chair will actively recruit and retain needed subspecialties to ensure the level of quality and service is exemplary.

  • The Chair fosters faculty and staff development, including the mentoring and professional development of junior faculty offering clear direction and enabling the growth of department faculty.

Financial:

  • The Chair has overall responsibility for the establishment and maintenance of the department budget. S/he will work collaboratively in the staffing and budget process for all components of the clinical, research and education programs. S/he must have the ability to communicate the financial affairs of the department effectively to executive leadership within the School of Medicine and be guided by a philosophy of openness and transparency in financial matters.

  • The Chair manages institutional support for faculty and program development in the department.

  • The Chair is responsible for identifying extramural funding to help achieve program goals.

Clinical:

  • The Chair will maintain, build and optimize clinical programs in the department by establishing effective clinical services that exceed national standards for measured outcomes, thereby optimizing patient care.

  • The Chair develops programs and initiatives to continuously improve primary and subspecialty care for the Tri-State community and southern West Virginia.

  • The Chair works with the senior administrative teams both within the School of Medicine and partner hospitals in effective capital budgeting and strategic direction for developing and acquiring new and innovative equipment, material and technology to maintain the most state-of the-art services available in the Department of Internal Medicine.

Quality/ Regulatory:

  • The Chair is responsible for the quality assurance and improvement activities in the department and will assure that quality outcomes and compliance are exemplary.

  • The Chair represents the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine and the department in the local, regional and national network of medical professionals.

  • The Chair will stay up-to-date and maintain compliance with all regulatory aspects of internal medicine programs.

Educational:

  • The Chair will oversee exemplary undergraduate and graduate medical education programs across the department which will always meet or exceed applicable accreditation standards, including but not limited to LCME and ACGME.

  • The Chair or his/her designee will coordinate and promote educational opportunities with other academic institutions when possible.

  • The Chair and division directors will provide both in-service and continuing education programs to hospital personnel and for other local, regional and national audiences in areas related to internal medicine and its subspecialties.

Scholarly Activity:

  • The Chair is expected to lead and participate in scholarly activity in the department.

  • The Chair is expected to encourage and facilitate coordination of research projects between the Department of Internal Medicine and other departments, as needed.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) with current American Board of Internal Medicine certification(s) is required.

  • Eligible for medical licensure in West Virginia.

Experience

  • Mid-career internist or specialist with a proven track record

  • At least five years of experience as a full-time faculty member in academic medicine

  • Demonstrated leadership experience including administrative experience and skills

  • Qualifications to fulfill the Marshall University criteria for a senior level faculty appointment

  • Proven background in faculty recruitment, mentoring and development

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
