HCC has been awarded a contract from Baystate Health to train Medical Assistants by providing students with noncredit training equivalent to college coursework. The target population will be current or newly recruited employees of Baystate, who will be paid 40 hours/week to complete an accelerated, 19-week training program. In addition, the course will include a 155 hour practicum placement with a Baystate Health medical practice, CPR Certification, exam preparation and the Medical Assistant exam. The program includes a free 3-week pre-training English and Math program to qualify them for admittance into the Medical Assistant training. The course is hybrid, M-F daytime, with possible weekend and evening laboratory courses.

The Business and Community Services Workforce Development program is looking for 1-2 Professional Tutors to join our team to provide support to Medical Assistant Students in this program. The majority of our students are adult learners, many of whom currently work in a related role in the field. The Tutor will report to the Assistant Vice President for Adult Education and Workforce Development and Training Manager, and will work closely with the noncredit Medical Assistant Coordinator and program. Tutoring will be both remote and in person.

Tutoring Responsibilities:

  • Provides training in the area of expertise.

  • Interprets teacher interventions and classroom directions.

  • Assess student's strengths and areas for growth.

  • Designs and implements academic support plans for students based upon assessed strengths and needs.

  • Works one-on-one with a caseload of students (ca. 15) in the capacity of a Learning Coach.  Meets with student caseload on a regular basis to monitor academic progress.

  • Interprets teacher interventions and classroom directions.

  • Administers and uses learning style inventories to plan a course of action for students seeking help.

  • Uses innovative teaching/learning strategies to enhance student understanding of course content.

  • Assists students in the writing process, pre-drafting, revising and editing.

  • Uses classroom management skills to facilitate study groups or supplemental instruction, as needed.

  • Provides individual and group tutoring to Medical Assistant students to facilitate student success, as needed.

  • Provides referrals for Medical Assistant students at HCC; connecting them with other necessary HCC support services; OSDDS, CAPS Center, Writing Center, Academic Advisor, MERC, Online tutoring, Thrive, and New Directions.

Required Hours and Physical Location:

  • This is a 12-18.5 hour a week position.

  • Position will be primarily daytime, M-F (3-4 days/week), both remote and face-to-face.

  • Position will also involve going into actual remote and in-person (lab)l Medical Assistant classes to provide in-class supplemental instruction and support weekly.

Technical Responsibilities:

  • Become skilled in using the software (Computer Assisted Instruction).

  • Help students integrate information technology within the given area.

  • When needed use the Assistive Technology Center.

  • Be able to identify and use resources.

  • Complete online Moodle orientation and familiarize with Moodle as learning platform.

  • Provide technical assistance to Medical Assistant students in using and navigating Moodle.

Training and Resource Support:

  • Attends team meetings as relevant to improve coordination of support for Medical Assistant students.

  • Communicates with Medical Assistant Program instructors on a regular basis to review tutorial services.

  • Communicates with other resources for assistance such as non-credit ESOL staff (Adult Ed), CAPS Director, Writing Coordinators, and OSD/DS, among other HCC Programs.

  • Provides online tutoring as a resource for Medical Assistant Students.

REQUIRED: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education, Public Health, Health Education, Community Health or relevant degree in health field or education; or an equivalent combination of experience and training which would lead to the competencies required to carry out the position's essential duties;

  • Knowledge of principles and concepts of Medical Assisting; 

  • Experience in tutoring and basic instruction in the Medical Assisting disciplines; 

  • Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

PREFERRED:

  • Ability to provide academic support via video conferencing platforms;

  • Two (2) years of relevant teaching and/or tutoring experience;

  • Experience preparing students for industry certification exams;

  • Prior experience using Canvas or an LMS system.
