Job Description:

Summary:

The Math & Science Center (MASC) provides in-person and remote tutoring from the Poughkeepsie, Fishkill, and Hudson Valley Regional Airport locations. Professional tutors provide comprehensive tutoring to individuals and small groups, from DCC locations, throughout the academic year for the subjects of math, biological science, physical science, computer science, nursing, accounting, economics, etc. The primary responsibilities of the MASC Professional Tutor are to clarify and reinforce course content, assignments, and material for specific subject areas. The Professional Tutor also provides guidance with helping students develop skills, behaviors, and habits that contribute to student success. These include goal setting, learning strategies, time management, organization, self-direction, and self-efficacy.

The MASC Professional Tutor will be responsible for ensuring that students receive guidance during the semester regarding all academic support available to provide any needed intervention. The MASC Professional Tutor will advocate for student educational achievement to the highest attainable standard, support student goals, and uphold the college's educational mission.

MASC Professional Tutors must demonstrate exceptional interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Under the supervision of the Director of the Math and Science Center, the professional tutors will:

  • Participate in the programming activities at the MASC;

  • Assist with the collection of data specific to Perkins and other grant reporting;

  • Become knowledgeable about and adhere to institutional policies, procedures, and requirements;

  • Collaborate with other departments on campus including ACT (Academic, Career, Transfer) Center, Admissions, etc.

  • Participate in, and assist with, facilitating workshops;

  • Continue professional development through MASC offered workshops and trainings to remain current with relevant tutoring practices;

  • Recognize and respect students' diverse backgrounds and possess strong interpersonal communication skills;

  • Manage technology needed to support tutoring programs, including but not limited to Banner, Kronos, Tutor Trac, Bookings, and Starfish;

  • Maintain consistent tutoring practices and build relationships with students;

  • Utilize Starfish to assist with student management, including providing student outreach

  • Participate in prospective student and first year programs including orientation, introductory seminar courses, and recruitment initiatives;

  • Additional duties as assigned by the Director of the Math and Science Center.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of at least 90 credits of undergraduate coursework in a field of study that enhances the individual's ability to assist students as a MASC Professional Tutor.

  • Ability to teach learning strategies to students.

  • Ability to lead small group tutoring sessions.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Concern for student needs in a demanding academic context, flexibility, patience, and professional integrity.

  • Knowledge, experience, and ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.

  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a field of study that enhances the individual's ability to assist students as a MASC Professional Tutor.

  • Master's Degree, preferably in higher education or a field of study that enhances the individual's ability to assist students.

  • At least two years of related experience in a college setting, especially in the areas of math and the sciences for delivery of academic support services.

  • Experience working with students in a community college environment.

  • Experience working with ESL (English as Second Language) students is highly desirable for a candidate.

Working conditions:

  • The performance of this work is in-person and on-site.

  • Flexible hours required.

  • Some travel will be necessary

Classification/Salary

Class: DUE/ Non-Teaching Educator

Salary Range: $26.79 - $31.45 per hour
