Student Health Services is committed to providing affordable, accessible and high quality health care services to those eligible through health promotion and disease prevention programs. Primary Purpose of Position

The primary purpose of the staff nurse is to deliver health care to the students enrolled at UNC Pembroke. As a staff nurse, this person would be able to teach students the value and nature of quality health maintenance and preventive care. The staff nurse would contribute to the maintenance of a health atmosphere in which both students and faculty live and work, and would minimize the effects of illness on the student's academic career. The staff nurse is responsible for organizing and providing direct patient care for those clients served by the UNCP Student Health Services. The staff nurse applies clinical expertise in the utilization of the nursing process (assessment) planning, intervention and evaluation. The staff nurse must communicate with local health care providers about referrals and continuity of care for the students. The staff nurse is responsible for assessing and documenting student symptoms, carrying out prescribed treatments, administering medications, patient teaching, reporting changes in patients' condition, and assisting the provider with procedures. Position requires occasional after hours and weekend hours.

Job Description

Direct Patient Care:

(a) Utilizes the nursing process which includes assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation for all clients and patients seen within the UNCP Student Health Services.

(b) Help provide patient education, which encourages students to take an active part in maintaining their own health as well as promoting health values within the UNCP community.

c) Organize and assist the provider during clinic hours, triage patient employees as necessary.

(d) Receive and evaluate health forms for compliance, such as with North Carolina Immunization statutes and communicable disease requirements.

(e) Acts as a liaison between the health care provider and patient employee to promote optimal patient/client care.

(f) Communicate with on/off campus health care providers for referrals and continuity of care.

(g) Comply with confidentiality requirements as set by HIPAA, FERPA, federal, state and local regulations.

(h) Makes independent nursing care decisions based on the: Nursing Process; NCBON standards; UNCP SHS Standing Operating Procedures and Standing Orders.

Please note this position does require occasional after hours and weekend work hours.

Indirect Patient Care:

(a) Help develop educational brochures/pamphlets that can be distributed throughout campus.

(b) Help provide health education classes to SHS staff when appropriate and during staff orientation and meetings.

Help with ordering medications and clinical supplies as needed.

(d) Help to coordinate annual inventory of medications and supplies.

(e) Serve on and off campus committees which review issues impacting the health and well-being of the campus community.

(f) Attend applicable workshops, continuing educational programs concerning delivery of health care and nursing skills.

(g) Maintain current knowledge of health care resources available for students.

(h) Assist with planning and implementing activities and programs sponsored by SHS, Student Affairs or any other organizations who ask for assistance from SHS (including but not limited to student orientations, resource fairs, etc.).

(i) Responsible for providing students with the necessary tools required to make healthy decisions through knowledge based resources and safe alternatives.

(j) Collaborate with other departments on campus to facilitate student involvement opportunities.

(k) Help provide CPR classes to the campus community.

(l) Keep up to date with on campus staff development opportunities provided on campus.

(m) Maintain and keep up to date with Electronic Medical Records for documentation of all patient care.

(n) Responsible for the COVID-19 informatics. Help manage, interpret and communicate vital medical data flowing in and out of the clinic. informatics. Help manage, interpret and communicate vital medical data flowing in and out of the clinic.

(o) Assist with educating, training and providing support to new and current staff who use the EMR system.

(p) Assist with the development of templates in the EMR system through collaboration with the medical provider.

(q) Assist with running reports, setting up new modules, implementing new features and etc. of the EMR system or other student health services database systems.

Analyze and interpret patient, nursing or information systems data to improve nursing services.

(s) Attend open house and new student and transfer student orientation.

This position is designated as Mandatory Personnel: Employees whose presence has been determined to be mandatory to University operations during certain types of adverse weather or emergency events.

Management Preference

  • 1 year Health Science, Public Health or other healthcare related experience.

  • Must display good judgment and comfort in making independent decisions, while understand limitations and elevating as needed in the absence of information.

  • Ability to exhibit a professional, positive attitude and work ethic.

  • Effectively manage multiple investigations and prioritize time effectively in a rapid pace environment

  • Effectively interpret guidance and adapt

  • Excellent interpersonal skills required and ability to interact professionally with culturally diverse individuals during a time of crisis and distress

  • Excellent organizational, communication, and written documentation skills

  • Proficiency with computers, phones, and other common modes of technology

Lic or Certification required by statute or regulation

Unrestricted and active license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. Verification required.
