General Summary:

This position developed for the Professional Development Program. The objective of this program is to develop the participant's management and leadership skills while accelerating broad business acumen across multiple core business areas to help further develop them for future leadership opportunities across the company.

The program consists of 3-4 cross functional job rotations over the course of 3-4 years. Job rotation assignments may vary from 12-18 months depending on the role, complexity and business needs. Business area rotations may include benefits, underwriting, customer services, enrollment, finance and marketing. In addition, this program includes a programmatic training and development component that will include a variety of training venues including classroom, self-study, field visits and project-based work which will occur throughout the duration of the program. Participants will each be assigned a leadership level mentor for the duration of the program to support them in their individualized professional growth and development plans. As an integral aspect of this Program, Participants will be expected early on in each rotation to assume an active role in managing some important aspect of the business related to their assignment. Participants will also provide feedback, suggestions and recommendations regarding process improvements, policies and procedures to the business areas as they proceed through the program.

Participants will be assessed after each cross functional rotation and re-qualified before moving onto the next phase of the program.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Successfully complete 3-4 cross-functional job rotations including all required functional training; outstanding work performance while in the assigned roles; demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with others; self-directed in completing high quality work within established timelines. Work locations may include Chattanooga TN, Portland ME, Columbia SC, Baton Rouge LA, and Dorking United Kingdom.

  • Work with a functional management during business rotations to gain deeper knowledge of each function, the day-to-day operations and interconnects with other parts of the business.

  • Participate in and successfully complete all assigned training and development courses, assignments and projects. Incorporate and leverage this knowledge into daily work performance.

  • Work on and/or lead special projects, as assigned, that require research and analysis. May involve partnering with other business areas to identify and resolve issues.

  • Continuous assessment of established training and work processes to identify areas for effectiveness and efficiency improvements. Contributes to operating effectiveness through information sharing, suggested process improvements and effective implementation of change.

  • Working with assigned mentor, develop personal developmental plan to complement program components to expand professional growth.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Specifications

  • Undergraduate degree with GPA of 3.3 or higher

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Economics or Math is preferred

  • Strong internship or equivalent work experience for graduating college seniors

  • Demonstrated leadership abilities

Underwriters evaluate the risk of insuring a potential Cigna customer and use that information to set premium rates for insurance policies. As part of our Underwriting team, you will directly impact our business on a daily basis, protecting Cigna's sound financial position which enables us to meet our financial commitments to our customers. RULDP associates begin to shape their career path through their professional experiences with program support and discussions with direct managers, mentors, RULDP peers, trainers, and career development program managers. RULDP offers structured technical training (ULTRA - Underwriting Leadership Training & Risk Assessment) and non-technical training (competency-based workshops), networking opportunities, formal mentoring, and exposure to a breadth of underwriting roles across multiple product lines. The duration of the program is 4-5 years, offering two 24-month rotations. In addition to rotations, you will gain insight into other roles within the Risk Management & Underwriting organization through formalized job shadows and project work. Throughout the program you will develop the skills and competencies necessary to become a successful Underwriter. RULDP is an extensive learning opportunity that guides your experience through the early stages of your Risk Management & Underwriting career. The program includes a mixture of instructor-led classroom training, self-study, and on-the-job experiences. Underwriting Rotation Opportunities include, but are not limited to: * CHC (Cigna Healthcare) * Pharmacy * Stop Loss * Dental * Behavioral Health * Supplemental Benefits What you'll do: The program will begin with approximately six to eight weeks of classroom training and three to six months of on-the-job training experience. This initial technical training curriculum is called ULTRA. ULTRA provides thorough education on Cigna products and services, insurance basics and risk dynamics, underwriting and risk selection, results oriented book of business management, negotiation skills, systems and tools, and contract language and terms. The knowledge and skills that the program provides will set you up to be a successful Underwriter at Cigna. Career Path: Upon completion of your technical training (ULTRA), you will be part of a team responsible for defining the appropriate premium rate level and plan design structure of cases, evaluating total case profitability, and conducting customer negotiations with Sales and Account Management on their book of business. You will also have the opportunity to build successful, productive relationships with matrix partners within Cigna, while receiving continuous career development and mentoring throughout your program experience.
