THE OPPORTUNITY
Western Forest Products is hiring for a Production Superintendent to be based out of our Columbia Vista Division in Vancouver, WA.
What You'll Do: With the overarching objective of Defining a Higher Standard in safety and continuous improvement, the Production Superintendent is responsible for delivering Dry Kiln, Planer, and Remanufacturing production volumes in a manner that support the Company's safety, sustainability, production, and financial goals. The Production Superintendent is a leadership role in the operation and provides direction for the safe and efficient coordination of Company employees and contractors.

Our ideal candidate has thorough knowledge of and experience with lumber, quality, and grading standards. We are looking for a highly organized leader with 8-10 years of experience in Lumber Manufacturing Operations and thorough knowledge of lumber manufacturing including equipment, processes, and products. You are eager to learn and want to grow with an industry leader in the ever-evolving, sustainable forestry sector.

Salary range of $90,000 - $116,000 based on your skill level, qualifications, and experience

RESPONSIBILITIES
Safety and Environmental Performance
Financial Performance
Work closely with the Operations Manager, Maintenance Department and Sales/Logistics to ensure coordination of operational decisions;
Maintain and manage budget forecasts involving production, quality, grade yields and safety in planer and kiln;
Support the establishment and ongoing improvement of production metrics;
Review costs and metrics and utilizes data to improve efficiency;
Oversee inventories, ensuring optimal levels are maintained;
Purchasing of materials required for operations;
Make recommendations on capital investment opportunities and oversee project implementation in order to provide greatest return to the company; and
Recommend effective and innovative strategies for the financial well-being of the Operation.
Leadership
Provide leadership and direction to improve safety and environmental performance, reduce operational costs, enhance lumber value, and maximize margins while promoting Western's core values;
Create and sustain a culture of accountability and continuous improvement;
Protect Western's reputation by managing issues, engaging support from senior leadership as required;
Hire, train, coach, mentor and manage the performance of salaried and hourly staff as well as contractors; and
Leads the ongoing, continuous improvement of processes, quality standards, and overall operational efficiency.
Operations
Manage the Planer and Kiln operations in a visible and hands-on manner including executing day to day plans, setting clear expectations with Employees, building quality requirements into each area, and driving ongoing, active communication across the teams;
Ensure safety, quality, environmental, state and federal legislation compliance across all elements of the operation, holding staff and contractors accountable for adhering to Company procedures and operating standards;
Efficiently manage and coordinate production operations to ensure timely and targeted delivery of production targets as forecasted to maximize margin for the company;
Provide supervision across all Kiln, Planer, and Remanufacturing operations (Kilns, Planer, Moulders, Packaging, Yard), building quality requirements into each operation;
Working closely with maintenance leadership, ensures that all maintenance projects are coordinated to ensure minimal downtime;
Work with Company and contractor personnel to drive positive change with respect to operational safety, quality and productivity; and
Stay abreast of industry innovations and trends in lumber manufacturing knowledge and practices to improve company margins.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
8-10 years of experience in Lumber Manufacturing Operations in increasingly responsible roles;
Thorough knowledge of lumber manufacturing including equipment, processes and products;
College degree in Forest Products or Business Administration preferred;
Lumber Grading ticket is considered an asset; and
Thorough knowledge of and experience with coastal lumber and grading.

Excellent working knowledge of applicable Washington WISHA, Department of Ecology, and Employment Standards regulations applicable to the lumber manufacturing industry;
Demonstrated strong analytical, problem solving and logical thinking skills;
Understanding of financial reports, forecasting and budgeting, and proficiency with computer software including MS Office;
Knowledge of Statistical Process Control (SPC) preferred; and
Experience and knowledge of sawmill optimization systems preferred.
