Position Purpose

The Superintendent will lead department activities to safely maximize plant capabilities and minimize production costs through continuous improvement activities. This includes personnel management, budgeting, capital expenditures, operations and maintenance. The incumbent will manage groups of people including exempt production supervisors, plant engineers, and contractors.

Principal Accountabilities
35% Development and supervision of direct and indirect reports (coaching, PMP's, Engagement). Consistently working with peers in establishing consistent personnel policies and plant practices which will lead to engaged employees.
10% Develop strategies for operations of assigned area to include technical optimization of processes. Involves working with applicable Business Unit process teams and functions. Lead/Manage/implement process improvements.
25% Establish, implement and maintain area budgets (capital and operating) through maintenance reliability activities and equipment ownership.
15% Oversee product and service quality to ensure total customer satisfaction. Interface with customers on plant visits and audits.
15% Administer Environmental, Health and Safety systems and processes.

Essential Functions/Requirements

  • Limited travel.

  • Light Work: Applying up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently, and/or a small amount of force constantly to move objects. If use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.

  • Climbing, Stooping, Kneeling, Crouching, Reaching, Standing, Walking, Finger dexterity, Grasping, Feeling, Talking.


  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • 5 or more years operations experience.

  • 2 or more years supervisory experience.

  • Strong collaboration skills, ability to work effectively within a process centered/multi-functional organization and handle multiple tasks.

  • Demonstrated strong working knowledge in Safety, OSHA and Environmental regulations.

  • Demonstrated ability to train, develop and support employees.

  • Demonstrated team building, leadership and conflict resolution skills.

  • Demonstrated entrepreneurial skills in the areas of customer focus, innovation and achieving business results.

  • Capital Project management experience.

  • Effective Interpersonal Communications.

  • Computer software - Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project.

  • CMMS system.


  • Preferred Bachelor's Degree in Engineering.

  • 5 or more years experience in engineering or operations.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop local business plans, measures, and objectives based on overall goals and objectives.

  • 10-hour OSHA training.

  • Working knowledge of CMMS system preferably SAP.

  • Understands production downtime tracking tools (PI, RT Duet or Informance)

  • Knowledge of reliability and maintenance (CMRP preferred)

  • Understanding of thermal dynamic inputs and outputs.

  • Exposure to Lean Manufacturing, TRACC, 5S, Kanban, Kaizen or other continuous improvement methodologies.

Ensures areas of responsibilities meet BU/Plant standards for safety, quality, efficiency and financial performance. Principal Accountabilities 35%- Safety/Risk Management: * Executes day-to-day operations of assigned area, ensuring direct reports are following policies and procedures related to employee safety and food/feed Safety. * Partners/collaborates with Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) and Food Safety, Quality and Regulatory (FSQR) experts to implement the most effective approach for complying with corporate safety policies and procedures: * Health & Safety: Enforces a culture of zero injury and illness. * Environmental: Understands and proactively avoid environmental impact and potential risk to the businesses. * Food Safety: Directly monitors risks associated with products. Ensures HACCP/FDA requirements are met in all food and feed processes. * Educates workforce in the food safety fundamentals and completes safety inspections and housekeeping audits. * Documents and investigates EHS/Food Safety incident data compiled by Production Supervisors to identify risks and recommend mitigation actions (i.e. safety index, RIFR, food safety index, CFSRA and FDA audits). * Maintains direct relationship with regulatory agencies (i.e. supervisors work sideby-side with FSQR and possibly MDEQ). 30%- Customer Focus/Product Innovation/Quality Management: * Directly monitors production outcomes, quantity, and quality to ensure customer and food safety requirements are within specifications. Works with other Production Supervisors to meet customer specifications and timeline. * Documents and investigates quality data issues that occur and compiles information and provides recommendations for improvement for review by FSQR, and other Production/Operations Supervisors. * Within defined area of scope, identifies risks and recommends areas of improvement and innovation. Measures quality performance in areas that impact the customers. * Supports BU/Plant customer relationship by meeting businesses objectives and by understanding how operational performance impacts internal/external customers. 15%- Production Financial Performance/Capital Planning Effectiveness: * Administers production budget for a department, process, or shift. * Executes purchase orders and ensures timely payment of invoices. * Accountable for compliance with department non-base capital investment plans. 20%- Operational/Reliability Excellence/Continuous Improvement: * Executes and monitors day-to-day operations for all production processes for defined departments, process, or shift. * Directly supervises daily operations of assigned area to achieve production throughput requirements including workflow, job assignments, scheduling, shift coverage, etc. * Supports, deploys and provides input to best in class operational practices. Utilizes deep technical skills and relevant experience to identify/solve problems and recommends/implements operating efficiencies. * Actively measures performance and implements leading common practices to promote operational efficiencies (i.e. yield optimization, energy/water usage reductions, etc.). * Implements and supports common reliability processes and ensures the reliability culture is foundational to operations (i.e. deploys common reliability processes and metrics; focus on eliminating the root-cause of reliability problems, etc.). * Supports/partners with local plant Reliability and Engineering management to develop approaches for meeting/tracking efficiency standards (scorecard and metrics control, total cost of maintenance, monthly review of compliance audits, etc.). * Champions a culture that promotes operational excellence. Recommends process improvements and supports business case for new investments/innovations. * Supports COEs to identify opportunities for continuous improvements applicable to the entire business/platform. * Supervises and provides coaching to Team Leads and production workers, including coaching Cargill's core values. * Assists in planning for future production workforce needs and participates in selection of employees. * Accountable for production talent development and engagement within a sector/department. * Responsible for training and on boarding new/transferred employees as well as workforce engagement, recognition, development and coaching. * Applies disciplinary actions when needed. Required Qualifications * Bachelor's Degree or High School Diploma plus 4 years of experience in manufacturing environment. * Experience in a supervisory role, directly supervising and developing others. * Experience with Microsoft Office and Windows. * Able and willing to work in a challenging and physical production and industrial environment.
