Job Description

  • Manages the Production and Warehouse operations for Rare Earth Chemicals, Raney Catalyst and Specialty Chemicals in a safe and cost effective manner

  • Manages leadership team to insure support and implementation of all Company policies with special emphasis on Environmental, Health and Safety

  • Participates in the preparation of annual Production and Warehouse operating budgets, site capital budgets based on sales forecasts with appropriate consideration to direct manufacturing costs. Six Sigma Cost Reduction and Cost Control Project Leader

  • Participates in development of short and long-term Chattanooga operating plans, schedules, resource requirements, equipment selections and plant policy developments

  • Instructs, trains and counsels subordinates in matters relating to new and existing plant processes and procedures. Insures Company policies are fairly and impartially enforced

  • Promotes Union / Management relationship and participates in various meetings concerning grievances, arbitrations, labor contract negotiations and quality of work life

  • Works with vendors regarding quality and costs of raw materials and supplies

  • Serves on plant Quality Council and works with all departments to maintain ISO certification

Required Skills

  • Ability to communicate throughout all levels of the organization

Required Experience

  • BS Degree in Chemical Engineering with at least 5 years in a management position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Additional job experience could be substituted for some of the education. Ten years chemical manufacturing experience with at least 5 years in a management position.

This position is immediately subordinate to the Senior Production Supervisor and is responsible for continuous and efficient production in the desired quantity and quality. Insures objectives are met relative to safety, quality, productivity and delivery. Essential Functions and Responsibilities (including but not limited to): * ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Supervises hourly associates and directs activities of task forces or teams to implement special programs and projects. SAFETY: Understand and assure compliance to Safety and Health practices. Observe work while being performed and stop production on any operations deemed unsafe. Conduct regular Toolbox Safety Meetings with all direct reports to review safety issues and improve safe working conditions. Train all associates on the safe operations of their machines and on selected safety topics. Investigate all incidents and accidents involving direct reports or reporting departments and make recommendations for corrective action. Implement immediate corrective action where possible. OPERATIONS: Initiate and perform evaluations of the manning and physical arrangements of the work station (methodizing) and existing operations to help assure maximum production. Make work assignments to best utilize the resources of the department he/she is leading. Provide required assistance to allow for observation of test conditions including test runs to be performed safely. Train department personnel to be technically and professionally competent. Assist in the development of and/or conduct appropriate developmental programs and instructional courses for departmental personnel. STANDARDS: Assure compliance within the departments(s) concerning departmental policies and practices. When questionable, inform the Sr. Supervisor or Operations Manager for further clarifications. Maintain the quality of standards and level of standards coverage to help assure a fair day's work for a fair day's pay. Audit performance against standards and act where needed. Where existing standards are no longer suitable to the jobs for which they have been developed, recommend revisions. Make observations of existing conditions and recommend/resolve, with appropriate levels of management, the method to be used before standards are developed or revised. Assure accuracy or reported information. LABOR AND RESOURCES: Assist the Sr. Supervisor and/or Operations Manager in managing labor problems, complaints, resources, etc. exhibiting a high degree of integrity and discretion in dealing with confidential data or information. Participate in fair and consistent problem or complaint resolution and answer suggestions as assigned. Gather information and conduct studies in resolving problems when requested. Issue reports on an acceptable format mutually agreed to with the Operations Manager. Authorized to spend within the limits of respective department budgets. SPECIAL PROJECTS: Conduct studies and gather information for inclusion in the requested reports. Assist with new product development and new product launches. Provide management support and coordinate department resources to successfully launch new products. ACCOUNTABILITY: Accountable to the Sr. Supervisor for the quality of support to the Plant and for adherence to department, plant and company policies and administrative procedures. Only limited direct supervision should be required. Objectives and assignments are frequently developed through individual initiative in addition to being determined by plant needs of assignment by Operations Manager. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING: Minimum of Associate Degree in Pre-Engineering, Business of Industrial Technology required and/or a minimum of 10 years manufacturing experience with at least 3 years in a supervisory role. Also, 3 to 5 years of experience in a metal fabricating environment is required. A Bachelor's Degree would be considered a plus. Strong communication skills (written and verbal) and advanced problem solving ability are required. Computer skills (Excel, Word & Power Point) are necessary. Experience in Continuous Improvement activities, Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and ISO/TS or a similar advanced quality system is desired. A background of hands-on machinery repair is preferred.
