Production Manager Steel Fabrication/Machining

Purpose:

Steel America, a division of Colonna's Shipyard, is seeking a Production Manager to oversee steel fabrication and/or machining production operations at our site in Norfolk, VA.

Position Summary:

Directs the overall management of the steel fabrication and/or machining production business area of Steel America and oversees all operational aspects of ongoing, moderately complex, government and/or commercial contracts. Assesses issues and develops resolutions to meet quality, cost, productivity/schedule, and safety goals and objectives. Responsible for business areas' profit/loss.

The position is located onsite in Norfolk, VA and will often require hours beyond a standard work week, to include evenings and weekends as needed. Position may require limited travel.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Key responsibilities include:

  • Holds responsibility for all trades, shops, and production areas within assigned business area.

  • Leads and develops subordinate supervision and management teams to effectively and safely meet production goals.

  • Responsible for adherence to project budgets, work scope, schedules, contract requirements, quality, and safety requirements by ensuring appropriate manning levels to meet project needs.

  • Supports hiring, retention efforts, assignment of resources, and overall personnel management to include oversight (review & approval routing) of personnel administration needs, recommendations/handling of change requests facilitated by EANs (pay, reclassification, etc.), and performance management programs.

  • Integrates all functions and activities necessary to perform projects to meet customer requirements and develops mechanisms for monitoring progress and problem intervention/solving.

Additionally, position will:

  • Plan and facilitate daily production meetings to create and deliver PODs by coordinating with other stakeholders to Integrate functions between departments/disciplines to accomplish day to day operations and deconflicting adverse evolutions, establishing priorities with regard to feedback/input from programs and production management.

  • Coordinate with other departments to Integrate functions between departments and disciplines to accomplish day to day operations

  • Oversee manning EACs with dates to complete, providing additional data, production insights and additional ad hoc reporting as needed to Program Management.

  • Develop and implement trade-wide policies and procedures that improve efficiency without compromising safety or quality.

  • Oversee all safety efforts by setting the example of safety consciousness to include support of EHS/Safety walkthroughs, shop/worksite cleanliness, and ensuring worksites free of hazards.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must have a Bachelors/Registered Apprentice (grad) and at least 3 years of experience managing ship repair/industrial fabrication/machining production projects of varying size and scope. Additional 4 years relative experience can be substituted for degree requirement.

  • Must have at least 8 years of progressive experience supporting general production operations.

  • Must have management and core experience supporting multiple trades in production operations.

  • Must understand general manufacturing processes and materials needed for steel fabrication and/or CNC/manual machining.

  • Must be able to understand job specifications, drawings, and corresponding technical references while performing in critical deadline situations.

  • Must have well-developed communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively communicate with employees/leadership/customers and prepare/deliver written reports and correspondence.

  • Must have regular, reliable attendance.

Preferred Skills/Qualifications:

  • Ten (10) or more years of production related experience in heavy steel fabrication or machining as a Production Leader/General Foreman at a Naval or commercial shipyard, or intermediate/depot-level maintenance experience in the military highly preferred.

  • Highly preferred to have experience supporting both government and commercial contract types.

  • B.S. in Mechanical/Industrial Engineering preferred.

  • Lean Six Sigma experience preferred.

Travel Requirements:

  • Occasional Travel; 25% or less.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs.

  • Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes.

  • May ride ships at sea for extended periods

  • Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.

  • Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.

  • Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts.

  • While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.

  • Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation

  • Frequent use of respirator.

  • Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding, cutting, or working with molten metal.
